Android tip: keep your synced contacts in order

Android automatically syncs contacts to the cloud, but it would behoove any Android owner to make sure that the job was done the way you want it to. For example, some users might have some data synced to Facebook, which means that contact data won't be there if you ever reset the phone for 3rd-party firmware, or get a new phone, and decide not to install the FB app. You might have added contacts to other categories that aren't displayed by default on some phones.

Long story short, all the contacts that have been synced to Google are available at http://www.google.com/contacts. If a contact is not on this list, it won't get synced to your phone.

Next up, many phones only show the "My Contacts" group from the left column of that page as a default option. If you have contacts in other categories, then you will have to make sure that those categories are displayed on the device. To do this, go to the phone's contact listing > press menu > display options > click your google account > check any other categories you want to display. See figure 1 for an example.

Finally, many users find that their contact list has exploded with "useless" contacts once they sync a Facebook account. This is because the FB app syncs every single friend you have as a contact in the device, whether or not they have a phone number. If you don't want these contacts displayed, but still want to benefit from FB's synchronization of photos and info for the contacts Google and FB do have in common, check "only contacts with phones" in figure 1.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE DIRECTIONS MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY ON OFFICIAL ROMs OR THOSE FROM OTHER 3RD-PARTY DEVELOPERS.
