Volume goes where?

For awhile now I've noticed that if I have a website open with sound (mostly youtube, turntable, synchtube) and I open a file in MS word or excel the volume from the site suddenly gets cut to a whisper. Reloading the site fixes it but I can't make sense of it or find an explanation online. Any theories? Mine is that word and excel files are jealous because they can't play any sounds of their own so they turn down the volume to make them feel better about their inability to express themselves through sound. It must be hard to be a computer file AND mute, just sitting around all day waiting for someone to interact with you only to be denied the ability to talk to them :(.

Do you have any voice plugins for either of those, by any chance? Windows does occasionally quiet other sounds to "improve voice calling" - it might be mistaking opening the program as an attempt to use voice communication. You can disable that in sound settings.

I don't think I do but that would make sense. I'll check it.

It was set to reduce the volume of other sounds by 50%. Neato.
