External Hard Drive Corrupt and Unreadable

edited July 2011 in Hardware
When I plugged in my external hard drive I got the error that "The file directory is corrupt or unreadable." I ran a chkdsk after which the computer would recognize the drive. However when I open the Hard drive no files are shown. If I check the drive properties, It shows the proper number of files and disk space used. So, I know the files are still there. Next I ran chkdsk E:/R afterwards I still did not have the directory. Any suggestions.
