Steam update gone wrong

When the updating dialog comes up steam starts to update but when it reaches 26% another dialog pops up and says " steam is temporarily unavailable, please try later". This has been happening since Tuesday 8/3/2011.

Uninstall and reinstall STEAM? Not the games, but the program itself.

Maybe give this a try:

It may not be removing that file when you uninstall, so even after reinstall it is using the same corrupted one.

If that doesn't work, perhaps try uninstalling in safe mode. Maybe another program is accessing a file that needs to be deleted during uninstall.
