Linksys router trouble

Hi all, I'm new here, in fact, this is my first post.
I've followed a link to another, older thread (2007), but I'm having exactly the same problem as those guys were.

My router is a WRT120N. Problem is, I can't change (or access) the password.

I've held the reset button in for more than a minute, unplugged it for 24 hrs, no luck.
The router seems to work fine, but I'm trying to set up a Roku XS, and it requires the router password to unlock for network access.
I bought the router about a year ago for another system, but never used it. I decided to set it up on this system so I could install the Roku, but I'm stumped.

Any good ideas out there?

Did you try logging in with a blank username, and "admin" for the password (no quotes) after you reset it?

Yes, in fact, here's the link to the other thread. I've done everything here, and then some.

It seems incapable of resetting the password. Works fine on this computer, and my daughter's laptop, but I can't seem to access the network with any other device. The other thing I've tried aside from Roku is my iphone.

What exactly is it that is working on your computer and your daughters laptop?

Are you sure everything is connecting to the same router? You don't have something defaulting to a neighbor's router?

To get to the username and password prompt, are you typing in 192.168.1.1 in a browser window?

Exactly everything else is working on both comps.
My network name shows up on my iphone and on the Roku setup screen, but on both devices it is showing as locked, so I can't access without the password.

The problem is that I never set up the router with a password, and I can't change the password (which I don't have), nor can I reset the router to the default password.

BTW, my nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away

Are you trying to access this router from Internet Explorer?

When you say it shows up on your iphone and ruko but it shows as locked and/or asks for a password, this is NOT the same thing as your router admin password. It's asking you for an encryption password which simply authenticates devices on to the network.

Just to make sure, do you understand the difference between a router's admin password and a network authentication password?

Roku is asking specifically for the router password.
I don't know about the iphone network password, I have the phone set to automatically detect wifi connections, but the iphone is pretty much irrelevant at this point.

I was able to get the router reset yesterday by installing another router (D-Link), and then going back and reinstalling the linksys router.
When I installed the D-Link router, I was able to change the password, and then for some reason, when I reinstalled the Linksys, that password carried over to that router.
This makes no sense to me, but it worked.

So, where I stand now is, I have the router password, but the Roku device still won't complete the setup. It now recognizes the router, but that's as far as I get ith it.

The Roku device needs your security passphrase, not the router admin password. All it is trying to do is authenticate on your network. This actually has nothing to do with getting in to the admin area of your router. If you can't figure out what your passphrase is, or connect without one, your option is to run a LAN cable from the Roku box to the wireless router.

(or reset the router, so that you know the admin password, allowing you to set the security passphrase among other things)
