that says it is connected . I have tryed repairing the connection, and it says it is repaired. I know that it is something simple , but for the life of

Try virus and spyware scanning the computer. If it has no AV (anti-virus software)on it, download avast! 6.0 or newer on another computer and burn what you got to CD and install avast on the computer that will not get onto the internet, then scan.

Here is a link that almost all malware does not block for avast 6.0:

This is a first step set-- fixing IE itself requires working in internet options-- dferent versions in IE can hide internet options in different menus and sub-menus.

Download and run this program. Just hit the "fix" button, then reboot.

That will fix and update winsock compared to what comes with XP-- and is worth a try. It will not hurt anything.

However, these symptoms can be gotten by having a home page that is blocked to IE, which spyware has been known to do so it can use the bandwidth. Parental web access software can block sites also. ISPs can block site access. Changing the homepage to http://www.google.com/ and saving the change and then shutting down and restarting IE might fix this, but if malware remains it may just revert the homepage after or during every reboot by poking into the registry.
