edited December 2011 in Science & Tech
I hope someone can help me.....I type in 192.168.1.1 and get a blank screen...no error msg no timed out msg....just blank screen. I type in 198.162.1.1 and get the sign in prompt that says "the site says level _15_ access". I have no idea what this means, plus the router address is wrong to begin with....I did do the cmd ipconfig and it says 192.168.1.1 so I am at a loss as to what to do next..help? anyone?

EASIEST thing to do under the circumstances is to look in the manual for how to reset the router. The blank screen is because the router has been accesed wrong: try https://192.168.1.1:80/ and see if you get something legible. In fact, in this case, I think trying the other access should come before resetting the router. If you cannot login(forgot password), then the only fix is a reset and reconfigure of router. To help more, we need to know model number of router - model number is on bottom or back of case.

Yes, to reconfigure, the newer home routers use https mode. Port can be configured to anything but default will be either 80 or 8080 - those are base internet ports. That is true of Linksys and D-Link home routers especially and I am figuring this is likely a home router. I just got a new multi-modal (wired and wireless) D-Link Dir 655 and it uses https to allow configuration, and will use (with login only) http to view configuration only. Some of the non-modern Linksys's can use other IPs by default, that is why I want the model number(.pdf manuals from support sites are SO nice for more reliable info).

At least the routers now use https for admin so configuring cannot be easily eavesdropped upon - especially wireless capable ones like my Dir 655 which is wireless Extreme N upper end.... :D

Thanks for the input! I actually unplugged the power supply for a good 10 mins and had no problems when i went into it again. It is a VERY old wrt54g.....I havn't bought a new one because i hv no idea what i should get....The main thing it is used for is xbox live. We have 50mb cable internet and run a wireless laptop and two wired xbox's on it.....any thoughts?

Newegg's most popular router right now is a D-Link Dir 655 (version A4, circa 2009 firmware) - they keep running out. I personally like it because I was able to auto-configure it with an automatic configuration wizard and because right on the install CD folder is a place to write down your WPA key and admin password. It defaults to a non-standard IP address. It uses NAT(Natural Address Translation), which is very good for a wirelss router to do. I do not know the current cost but if it went back up after the cyber sales ($64.99) and is now above $89.99 I would get a Dir 655 Rev. B direct from D-Link for $89.99 retail.

Leaving your router off for ten minutes and then having it recover might indicate it locked up for one of two(most likely) reasons:

Got attacked(wireless login attempts in a bunch, all in a row) and seized up (locked itself), or:

Got surged and locked up thinking it was being attacked.

Here is a link to that D-Link Dir 655 router on Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215

They only raised it to $69.99. It is also a 10/100/1000 wired router(4 wired ports) and has QoS technology for web gaming and LAN gaming.

indeed. ssl encryption run on 443 by default. I suppose you COULD remap it to port 80 but then you wouldn't want to specify https, since that makes the browser look at the default of 443. Oh my.

    Thanks for the port correction.
