Can anyone help me find the the file please? I need the download so that I can upgrade my Windows XP Home Edition to Service Pack 1. I can't get to SP2 & SP3 until I do so. Does anyone have a clue as to where I can find this???

Looks like the express install is all that's left: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=19751

It failed to work and that's why I was in a panic. When I had no other choice I tried going straight to SP2 and it worked. I was like WTF???
Everything I had read said that SP1 was a prerequisite to SP2 and SP2 to SP3 ...turned out to not be the case.

So now I'm left wondering if I could have gone straight to SP3 from a vanilla install?

At any rate ...I still had about 200 high priority updates to download after all that ...but I am successfully up and running.

Windows Service Packs have always been cumulative. You can just install SP3 and that's that. Each one includes all previous patches.

What Microsoft says for SP3 is that it must be installed after SP2 or SP1a are installed. They say this on thier service pack center page. I thought what you said was true also, until I read that. I'm not trolling, here is the link:

Thanks John. When you try to run windows update with no service packs installed it takes you to a guide and somewhere in that guide is where I was reading (and apparantly believing) the prerequisite crap.

    Thanks for the post John.

The latest service pack for Windows XP is Service Pack 3 (SP3). To install Windows XP SP3, you must first have SP1a or SP2 installed.

Well, they HAD to drop support for thier own Microsoft VM due to some legal problems that ended in 2010. SP2 continued what SP1 (not SP1a) had started, the Microsoft VM introduction and support mostly. So, they made an SP1a that had no Microsoft VM in it and allowed folks to update to SP3 (which has no VM in it) directly from SP1a for XP. That got them out of some legal hot water and somewhat kludgily patched the update routing for XP.

I would guess the guide you read was pre-2010 or early 2010 content, and that it somehow never got pulled from the site. You are welcome, any time. :D
