I was recently asked for info on some of the sites that I use for travel. Since I compiled the info anyway, I figured I'd also post it here:

Hotwire for hotels and sometimes rental cars:

http://www.hotwire.com/
I have found hotwire useful for getting really cheap hotel deals (and sometimes cheap car rentals), such as $49 per night for a hotel that usually goes for $149 per night (and $16 per day for a car rental). The only caveat is that it doesn't tell you what hotel you're getting before you book, which leads us to the next site...

Forum that helps define what hotel you're getting with Hotwire:
http://www.betterbidding.com/
Listed by state and sometimes city, this forum allows you to cross-reference the hotel location and amenities from Hotwire's list to determine what hotel you're most likely booking.

Want to know what kind of quality to expect in a hotel? Here it is:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/
Basically ranks hotels by popularity and quality by city. Recent user reviews sometimes help you determine what your hotel experience will most likely be.

Costco Travel for cars and sometimes hotels:

http://www.costcotravel.com/
I use Costco Travel as a cross-reference on hotel and cruise deals, and I most often find myself booking rental cars through here. I got an 8-day rental in LA for $115 from Costco Travel once, and I usually book any car rental that doesn't originate at an airport here as well, since the few times that Hotwire car rentals are cheaper than the Costco Travel rates you have to book at an airport location. Every time I rent a car to go to ICHQ, I book through here and can get it for <$50 for a 3-day weekend.

Airfare:
http://www.kayak.com/
Kayak is a powerful airfare search that can look across multiple airlines, multiple cities, and even flexible dates. I've flown across the country round trip for <$250 by using Kayak searches.

Site that describes what seats are good and bad per airline and plane:
http://www.seatguru.com/
Seat Guru has a fairly comprehensive list of airlines and planes in their fleets with good, bad, and caution seats listed out for you. It helps when you get to that critical step in booking where you have to pick from the few seats that remain on the airplane.

Packing methods and theory:
http://www.onebag.com/
An interesting site that details how to pack for a trip using primarily a carry-on only. This is becoming more and more useful as more airlines start to add fees for your first checked bag.
