Computer Problem

edited February 2004 in Hardware
Ok heres how it all started out. I just got a abit nf7 mobo and a amd 3000+ cpu from gnomewizard. Got the thing home and tried to reformat but it wouldnt reformat on on first HD- It would only reformat the second one. (Both are 80 gig's)so i reformated the 2nd one thinking i could reformat the first one through windows it self. went to try to reformat by going to my computer- and right clicking and going down format- clicked everything wouldnt work.tried it with out the quickformat worked fine but lost the patience so i stopped it. so i took the first one out cause the it had xp on it also. but when i turned it on it came up as "ntldr missing" so i put the first one back in and still came up as ntldr missing. need some help

u can't format the drive that contain winxp installation while you are in windows.

now what u can do is, take out your winxp cd, and boot off of it and do a repair installation.

Good answer.... But basicly what happened, I think, is one of two things.... Either the first HD still had an XP install on it, so XP stuck the boot sector there and installed on second HD, or first HD was also damaged in file system or in physical reality of hardware and XP used second HD for install.

When that happens, XP installs on what is secodn drive at install time and with boot sector on first, you get a situation where the boot part is looking for a second HD to find rest of itself on.

So, next question is what were they hooked to, IDE raid or the main IDE connector???

I would wipe both drives and start over if the repair install does not fix.

My computer-->Right click .. Select "properties"... Go to "advanced" and then "Startup and Recovery" settings.

See the list of operating systems? Click that edit button.

Delete the line with the one you DON'T need. Be careful! Make sure it's the right one!
