[BLOG] Singing to scare the cats away
Tonight I decided to try something different.
I'm a musician as well as every other thing I am (geek, gamer, etc.) and I decided I should get myself back into vocal shape by singing WHILE going out on my nighttime walks. I figured this would have the added benefit of increasing lung capacity, as it would force you to take those breaths and use the diaphragm WHILE you are taking in air for walking.
Kills two birds with one stone, saves time, and I get to practice music while losing weight. In practice, it was a lot tougher than it looked. For starters, I found that trying to sing properly while waking was quite difficult, because walking jars your diaphragm with each step, meaning if I tried to maintain a note it would distort a bit as my foot hits the pavement. This is on top of the extra strain on the lungs having to sing loudly while walking.
Regardless, I managed to do about 40 minutes today, with about 15 minutes spent singing. I couldn't keep it up the entire time, I had to take breaks to recover my breath as it was very taxing.
An interesting side effect though was that, whilst singing, I would scare any cat in the vicinity, judging by how quickly they would dart away as I drew near. I scared a total of three cats today, something I usually don't do because I tend to be very stealthy while walking and the animals around me don't mind. But today I scored three points!
I will gun for 5 points tomorrow night.
