[BLOG] My favorite albums growing up
Live - Throwing Copper 1994
This was the soundtrack to senior year in highschool. I wore out two cassettes, and finally got smart to get the CD, only to have it stolen. So yes, I have bought this album 4 times. My senior year was a strange time with breaking up with my girlfriend of two years, getting my driver's license and my first vehicle, an 1985 Jeep CJ-7. From bon-fire parties in sand pits to throwing bails of hay on my cousin's farm, this CD was playing. Anytime these days that I take a roadtrip to Vermont, this album gets played. (Favorite songs: T.B.D.| White, Discussion|Pillar of Davidson)
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction 1987
I was in 7th grade when I was introduced to this album, and it changed the type of music I listened to forever. Before hand I had been listening to Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and that stupid Footloose soundtrack. Then my cousin gave me this album as a present. I had never heard of GN'R, but I put the headphones on a blasted it. I don't think I took the headphones off until the next day when I had to go to school. I was in love with GN'R, and so began my love for 80's Hair Metal. (Favorite songs: Sweet Child O' Mine|Rocket Queen|Nightrain)
Phish - Picture of Nectar 1992
Growing up in Vermont, I'm kinda embarrassed I didn't know who the hell Phish was until my senior year of highschool when my friend Jacob invited me to one of their concerts at Sugarbush. I went to the concert on the side of a mountain with 52,000 other fans and had an absolute blast. Now I can honestly say I'm not a big Phish fan, but this album is just great. It was played at many parties my first year in the Army, and to this day I'll occasionally throw it in for a change-up. (Favorite songs: Eliza|Cavern|Guelah Papyrus)
Def Leppard - Hysteria 1987
Simply put, every song on this album, is great. I know one song was over-played on the radios, but I can still listen to this album today 20 years later and enjoy it. Not as hard rock as GN'R, this albums songs had more meaning to me growing up. Dealing with life ups and downs, this album kept me sane many times. To say I don't secretly fade away back to memory lane of highschool days listening to this album, would be a lie. (Favorite songs: Animal|Hysteria|Gods of War)
Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming 1994
Prett much senior year of highschool, if Live or Phish wasnt playing in my CD player, this album was. Girls love Dave Matthews, I love girls, you see where this is going. Luckily, I got to see Dave Matthews in concert in Nashville, and it was a great concert, and my appreciation for his style of music grew. I can't say I listen to them much anymore, but maybe I will go pick up the new album. (Favorite songs: What Would You Say|Satelite|Ants Marching)
Well, there we have it. 5 greats albums that were a big part of my growing up years, including highschool memories. How about you? I would love to hear what songs got you through the most difficult years of growing up!

It saddens me in a way, we may be the last generation that truly appreciates rock albums from cover to cover. For me, its still the best way to enjoy music, complete, as it was intended.
