OS/software for NAS/sharing media to PS3

I currently have ubuntu set up with a samba share of a large drive on my network. I'd like to downclock the system to save power and also move to an OS more designed for NAS-type operation. One big thing I'd like to do is to stream media to my ps3.

I've heard FreeNAS is nice because it supports ZFS and all the goodies that come with that.

Sooo:
1) Best OS? FreeNAS?
2) Any recommended software to install for streaming to PS3?
3) other suggestions?

FreeNAS 7 is worth a try.

v8 has all the cool ZFS stuff but it will want 6GB RAM to use it and it doesn't have FUPPES (UPnP server) installed by default like 7 does.

I use PS3 Media Server for streaming. Works pretty well, and it's free.

I used PS3 Media Server for a while, but no longer have a PS3 with which to stream. It was a pretty cool solution. Good if you want to still use the PC for other things

I haven't personally used FreeNAS but heard great things.

I've got 8 in there now, but wow that seems like a high memory requirement...

For those of you who use ps3 media server, what quality settings do you use? I'm setting this up without a display and the documentation is actually pretty sparse :(
