open your mixer, go to properties, make sure that auxiliary is checked. now turn down the volume on the auxiliary knob all the way down. if that doesn't work, maybe your cables between your speakers and sound card are jacked. baring that, save $20 and buy a new card.

    From your current card, yes.
I have the same issue on my laptop. And my Amiga on a TV. AFAIK the Monitor is interfering with the speakers in some way.

Audigy 2 ZS is the best all-round card and the Revo 7.1 is the best music card around.
On the cheaper end, look for something like the Hercules Fortissimo III or something.

It sounds like you have aux or unused inputs open. Any input that you don't need should be disabled, not just turned down. You might try turning them off one at a time to find which is picking up the noise. It could be your line from the CD to the card.

Make sure that you bring up ALL the mixer controls before hand by clicking "Options" >> "Properties" in the mixer window and then ticking all the boxes in the area below, and oking that Window.

PLEASE read this whole post and answer the questions at bottom before doing any of this! This is important!

Ok, I have worked with a bunch of those cards over the years.

First, those cards do not like being in the PCI slot right next to the AGP slot unless you force the IRQ in BIOS, and in some cases that changes the AGP IRQ also. So, try moving the card so that there is the AGP video in a brown slot, then an empty white PCI slot, THEN the sound card.

BUT, first I need to know which Windows this is, becasue the NEXT step will be determined by what Windows you have. AND, you will need to know how to get into BIOS and how to jumper your sound card maybe (If you have the sound card manual or CD, this would be very useful, if not, I will tell you where to get that info on the web but will need to know what sound card and what manual).

Reason to need to know what Windows you have, is some Windows will pull sound system if you are not very careful, and with some Windows you have to have the Widnows CD handy when you reinstall Windows.

Basicly, if when Windows redraws screen you get static, there is an IRQ conflcit usually between IRQ used for the PCI slot the sound card is in and the IRQ used for video. Sound card needs to not be in PCI slot right next to video card, that is often assigned same IRQ. Playing in BIOS to force first PCI slot next to the AGP slot to use a different IRQ sometimes does not work, but sometimes does.

Bascily, I would try to have the sound card set up so it does this:

    IRQ 7
DMA 1 and 5 (one for digital and one for legacy drivers if this is an older Windows like 98 or ME). That card CAN be est to DMA 0 but you do NOT want this!

If this is 98, when you uninstall the drivers for a sound card, often teh entire windows sound system gets uninstalled. If this is XP, you can uninstall drivers, shut down computer in XP, move card, and relaod the drivers and often XP will rehook the sound right back up. ME sometimes will. 98 is a PITA to change sound IRQ and slot sound card is in, and 95 is even worse.

    So, what Windows is this???

Do you have a physical sound Blaster 16 card sticking up in a PCI slot, or is there no card??? If you have a physical card, do you have a manual for it and a CD from Creative for it???

Lets go from there, but lets get answers to those two questions before you do anything on your end, OK???

One other thing, can you borrow a pair of speakers or a headphone and see if it is the speakers or headphone (headset)???
