Can someone help me anwser this?

edited April 2012 in Science & Tech
My friends got his email hack, and they found his user name and password in there linked to a online poker site, They logged into his site and took almost $10.000 out of there. And the poker site is saying that it was him that did it (his IPA). It wasn't him. My question is can someone log into your account(from other state lets say) and make it look like it was you. your IPA?

Short answer yes. Long answer no.

It can be done in the short term but that's only on the surface using something like an IP mask. Any decent tech company could find out the real source without too much effort/digging.

If your friend's computer got rootkitted as well as email hacked, yes, they could login THROUGH his/her computer if they were good enough. IP addresses can also be spoofed/fraudulently falsified in several ways, typically using routers although computer IP addresses can be used falsely also.

For instance, my router here has a fixed IP, though it is secured many other ways from penetration (I worked with a mfr tech on telephone for four hours to secure it). And my computers run AV all the time and security software also. If that router were physically stolen, any site which logs my router IP would recognize it as my setup.

So, it is setup to refuse absolutely any wireless (WiFi) configuration attempts, and wireless connection and use of my internet through it is deliberately difficult at best. I have two years of Cisco Academy training under my belt, and even folks who make a living at router configuration know that it is impossible to fully prevent a gateway router(one that stands between local network or computer and internet modem in this case) from being penetrated ever.

Sorry, but it looks like your friend's setup was more hacked than just email hacking.
