Problems with Microsoft Outlook 2007-Possible Win32 Cryptor

Hi and thank you in advance for all of your help.

About a week ago, we started having problems with our Outlook 2007. The error message we would receive is:

Cannot start Microsoft office outlook. Cannot open the outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\Tim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any application that is using this file and try again. You might need to restart your computer.

This firts time it happened. I ran Malwarebytes, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and AVG free scans, nothing showed up. I also did a CC cleaner on the computer. Restarted it and opened Outlook and it ran fine.

It happened again a couple of days later and went through the same process. Everything was fine.

Next time it happened, we thought that maybe Malwarebytes was causing the problem, since we had a free trial that was almost up and we got the notification message in the task bar. So I removed Malwarebytes and that seemed to fix it.

On Monday evening, we got a warning from AVG that we had Win32 Cryptor on our computer, we removed it and then ran a full scan. Nothing else showed up.

On Tuesday morning, the same error message for Outlook again.

So, I did some research to see what I could learn & it said could be very tricky to get rid off. So maybe I didn't get rid of it. I went on Zimbio and someone recommended using PCTools. I downloaded PC tools and ran it, nothing came up. I also downloaded a Free updated trial of Norton AntiVirus, ran the full scan, nothing. Of, course it removed AVG, so there was no conflict. So I thought I was clean.

When we came to the computer this morning, a new message was in the right reading pane area. It said:
Cannot Display the folder. The file C:\Users\Tim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst cannot be accessed because another workstation has modified it. Close and then restart all email enabled applications. You might need to restart your computer.

I closed the program and tried to re-open it and got the 1st error message again. I shut down the computer and have tried to re-open Outlook and get the 1st error message.

Here is the information about the computer:

Dell 5110
Win 7 SP1
I5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
4GB Ram
64-Bit OS

I installed HJT and just tried to run it and save the file. It will not save the file. This is the message I received: For some reason your system denied write access to the host file. If any hijacked domains are in the file, hijack this may not be able to fix this.

I am not able to provide a copy of the log. If you can advise how to get around that, save it another way or whatever, please let me know.

Again thank you.
Joan

    Try pastebin for your logs

Download Combofix to USB on a working PC (download page, detailed instructions), restart, stop any programs that aren't necessary AND turn off your AV then run it. That should default out the hosts file (IIRC, if not, try opening it with notepad ... location is

If that comes back good and all those scanners showed clean, you may just need to use the PST repair tool. Make sure Outlook is not running in taskmanager and run scanpst as administrator, then point it at the file path you listed up there. Let it perform any repairs, then attempt to open outlook when it is done.

I started the computer in safe mode and was able to get the hjt log. Do you want me to do those things or do you want to look at the log first? I have to split the HJT log.

I don't think HJT was running as administrator, based on it only reporting the one program running. Run it again and use pastebin to keep it all in one. You can use a temporary link rather than registering.

Download and run Norton Removal Tool (direct link) to remove traces of Norton.

There are definite traces of multiple AV program (which makes sense, given your post. A good free one is Avira and there is a registry fix to hide the occasional "hey we have a paid product" or you can use MSE.

I would run combofix (as administrator via the right-click menu) in normal mode still. If there is something still floating around, it'll remove it. If not, nothing bad should happen.
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
    I removed Norton.

Here is the pastebin link for combofix: http://pastebin.com/n9TTkf3c

I am the only user on the computer and it shows me as the administrator for the the computer, so I don't know why it shows only 1 program running. I had to do it in the safe mode to get it to save the file log, so maybe that is it.

I have installed, updated and quick scanned the computer with MSE.

Here is the pastebin link for HJT log run in the safemode: http://pastebin.com/uNeCHPC1

It will not let me run HJT in the regular mode and save a log file, so I have to do it in the safe mode.

After I ran the scans, combo fix and MSE, then restarted the computer. Outlook appears to be working fine.

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do.

    Thanks,
    Joan

Are you running tools with the right-click run as administrator? Running them as yourself even if you are the only administrator is not equal to running them as an administrator.

Anyways, it looks like you're probably good to go.
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
The shortcut for HJT does not show administrator when I right click, is there something I did wrong when I downloaded it? The combofix did though. I appreciate your assistance.

    Thank you,
    Joan

  • TushonTushon I'm scared, Coach Alexandria, VA Icrontian
Strange, you can try holding shift then right-clicking (release shift after the menu comes up). I don't think it has anything to do with how you downloaded it. The last thing you might want to do is run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt (navigate to c:\windows\system32\ and run cmd as administrator via same method just described then type in sfc /scannow)
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
I did a google search and got re-directed to happili. I have read this is a virus??? Is that true and how do I get rid of it?
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
I did the shift right click and it worked,

Here is the location for the latest HJT log: http://pastebin.com/MwRLMi7y

    Thanks, Joan

Okay, do you have a brother printer?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Browny02\Brother\BrStMonW.exe looks strange but may be okay.
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
    Yes we do.
  • TushonTushon I'm scared, Coach Alexandria, VA Icrontian
Okay then I think you are solid
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
what is the happili re-direct thing?
  • TushonTushon I'm scared, Coach Alexandria, VA Icrontian
    In which link?
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
It happened when I went to a Google search and clicked on a link, it then went to the happili site. I've read that it is a virus. There is stuff out there that tells how to remove it, but how do you know if it is safe? Also, I just tried to open Outlook again & it had an error again. I'm really lost.....
  • TushonTushon I'm scared, Coach Alexandria, VA Icrontian
Run Combofix again using the right-click admin method, then check your proxy settings in Internet Tools under Control Panel. Did you run scanpst, or what was the error?
  • joanmtjoanmt Dallas, TX New
I am doing a full MSE scan and it has found on the preliminary scan, so I want to see what it finds and I will let you know. I did run Combofix as the administrator, but will do it again once the scan finishes, most likely tomorrow. No I did not run the scanpst yet. Not really clear on how to do that. I will let you know the results of the MSE scan & post the Combofix scan & let you know when it is done. Thank you, Joan
