I think it's a great deal myself. I'm in the market to upgrade my GF4600 and was looking at a 9600. I may buy it for you. From what I understand, the 9600 has great overclockability to deliver near 9800 performance for a fraction of the price.
Stay away from that powercooler version wih 256mb. The memory is only clocked at 400mhz---real 9600pro have 600mhz memory (effective). I would try to find the mystery 9600pro's that have 2.83ns RAM. I have only seen one, and it was an FIC card. Anyway I have a 9600pro from ATI that o/c's to 500/324 (samsung 3.3ns RAM) with a vantec iceburg and some RAMsinks. Performance is good, but not anywhere near 9800pro's. One card that interests me is the 9800SE. Check this out...
I know that SE's are 'cheap' underclocked versions of their big brothers, but price/performance ratio is what to look at. For the same price as a 9600pro, you get better performance. The stock 9800SE's score about 4300 in 3dmark03, while my overclocked 9600pro scores 3983. Good luck with your upgrade.
