Getting Thief: The Dark Project (Gold) or Thief: The Metal Age to work on modern PCs
With the steam sale on the Thief series recently I've noticed that a few of Icrontic's members have finally gotten their hands on this gem of a series. Similarly I rebought them simply because they are so awesome and so that I wouldn't need to drag my discs with me to University, but I digress let's get back on topic shall we?
One of the largest issues with the Thief games (Or any Looking Glass game for that matter) is that their 'Dark Engine' is not compatible with modern PCs in any way, shape, or form. In light of this fans of the game created a set of files called DDFix and Enhancement Resolution Patch which rework the Dark Engine to function on modern hardware and even adds some HD texturing into the games.
If you've ever attempted to boot either game outside of Windows 95 compatibility (Which leaves you with an incredibly small window as opposed to a full screen game) and have been met with a completely black screen then DDFix will resolve this issue and the resolution enhancement pack will allow the game to be played above an 800*600 resolution.
EDIT: To add to the Thief experience may I suggest installing Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age a fan made 'expansion pack' adding in an entirely new story aside from that of the games main protagonist featuring fully animated cutscenes and 13 full length missions.

The EXE provided in the link corrupts the files on Steam preventing you from booting the game, to fix this rollback to the original Steam files and extract the DDFix files (Minus the exe) back into your Thief2 folder in your Steam directory. Then scroll down and run the Thief2.exe, not the noDDfix exe. After this Thief2 should work just fine on your computer.
