Dell Inspiron 1545 a few keys work, most don't

edited July 2012 in Hardware
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 where only a couple of the keys work. All the numerals work 0-9, from the letters only the following work (t, y, g, h), the up key works but the other arrow keys don't...

Pretty much most of the keyboard doesn't work, I replaced the keyboard with a new one and I still have the same issue.
An external keyboard works fine. I'm just trying to figure out if there's a fix to this issue or no. Thanks!

Unlike laptop keyboards, externals have their own chip to decode signals. Cable to chip for keyboard in laptop might be bad, as they have multiple data lines in them. Chip for keyboard in laptop might also be bad, though.
  • is there a fix for this?

Sounds like it might be the internal ribbon connector socket rather than the keyboard. It sounds like you'd need a new motherboard.

Ribbon cable itself can be bad. Sometimes folks get a FRU keyboard and no cable. See if just the ribbon cable is available first, then get motherboard if that does not fix.

This is true IF they supplied no cable with keyboard.
