What have you played already? The basics are definitely going to be:

    Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI (Japanese, III for English)
    Earthbound
    Secret of Mana
    Bandrikardichoke

If you've played those already, maybe Illusion of Gaia or Breath of Fire. If you like Secret of Mana, try Secret of Evermore or Seiken Densetsu 3. SD3 was the sequel to Secret of Mana that the US never got. There are fan-translated ROMs, or you could play it in Japanese.

I can't recommend enough the games mentioned above — I've played all the ones listed, and they're all fantastic. Prime just hit my personal dream list, with Gargoyle adding yet some more of my favorites. Secret of Mana in particular is my all-time favorite game of ANY console, evar. And it's multi-player co-op, to boot!

    Some more recommended games:
Mother 3 (Earthbound 2, GBA) -- use the Starman.net fan translation (game didn't come to USA), it's FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC, and very funny
Super Mario RPG (SNES) -- a fantastic Square-Nintendo collaboration and a SOLID RPG
Lufia II (SNES) -- I'm actually playing this now. It's excellent!
Shining Force II (Genesis) -- Very solid turn-based tactical RPG
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium (Genesis) -- One of (if not THE) best RPG's on the Genesis
The "other" SNES Final Fantasies (IV and V) -- while VI (or III in the USA) is the best one, the other two are also good
Tactics Ogre / Ogre Battle (SNES) -- another great tactical RPG

Honorable mention goes to E.V.O.: The Search for Eden (SNES). It's more of an action side-scrolling game with some minor RPG elements. But I loved it. It had a unique gameplay mechanic. You're a creature living in ancient times, starting out as a fish and eventually becoming a mammal. Instead of leveling up, you evolve your body parts to survive -- sharper jaws increase offense, armored bodies increase health (but make you slower/heavier), etc. The way you customize your creature was amazing for its time. And damn, was it fun.

I was a huge fan of Breath of Fire 1 and Breath of Fire 2. Super Mario RPG was also a standout, it had some pretty good humour, a fun combat system, a solid RPG all around.

    *throws in his 2 cents*

A Valley Without Wind reminds me of old school side scrolling RPGs. It's not exactly an old game but it might suit your taste

If you're going to play Ogre Battle, see if you can find the Playstation version. It's basically the same, but allows saving in the middle of levels. Although if playing on an emulator with save states, that doesn't matter. Better resolution in background graphics in the Playstation version, though.

After you play all of those, you can get Cthulhu Saves the World which parodies these 16-bit rpgs quite nicely.

Speaking of 16-bit rpg parodies, I recommend Breath of Death VII (made by Zeboyd Games, same team that made Cthulhu Saves the World).

Zork. Although technically I think that was 8-bit.

I think Zork was actually 4-bit
