Home mail: check and read once or twice a day, depending on wheter I'm expecting anything. Work e-mail: check and delete, occasionally read three to four times a week. (It's too much of a hassle)
Home & Work email: Both have browser notifications and go to my smartphone, so I answer them right away unless I'm occupied in a meeting or playing a game.
Probably a half dozen times a day. I'm sure it varies widely - sometimes as little as once or twice, sometimes 20. Depends on what I'm working on and how bad my attention span is that day.
The first thing I did when I got my iPhone was turn off instant email notifications. That's a crazy level of distraction.
Post-college I check my university email every day, and I have no idea why. During school I'd force myself to check it at least once a week. I think I miss school.
