Desktop speaker recommendation

My desktop speakers at work are crapping out. Randomly, they'll drop a channel. It's annoying. Anyone have recommendations on 2.0 or 2.1 stereo speakers for a work environment? I listen to music almost constantly. Don't need loud. I'm not looking to shake the windows. But I do want good sound... Trying to stick with $50 or less budget at Newegg.

I can vouch for the Altec Lansing VS2620 as budget desktop speakers. For the office, I'd say skip the sub unless you think their will be some after hours occasions to enjoy it. This set plays clean, sounds reasonably good, and you will can't argue with it for $20.

If you have good speakers, there's no reason to get a sub. I was going to recommend some M-Audios, but reviews said their low-end isn't worth touching (bad stereo balance is the biggest issue...). Just take a Walkman or something to a store that has speakers and get the people there to plug them in and let you listen to them. You'll only know if you try them out, and returning things purchased online is a pain.
  • I would second what Cliff says. Altec Lansing makes decent quality inexpensive speakers. I just wish they still made high end ones as well. They used to make some awesome, possibly over-powered, 5.1 desktop speakers that I really wanted a few years back. Seems like it was the last line of high-end surround speakers they made :(

M-Audio AV20s, AV30s if you can stretch your budget a bit.

@MAGIC, the AV20s were the ones I was talking about. A lot of the reviews I read talked about a serious stereo imbalance between the speakers. Have you tried these personally?

I think I have the AV30s (can check when I get home) and haven't had any issues.
