1) Not iPad. (I have a fair amount in android apps and I also enjoy the open-ness)

2) Really looking for one for reading academic papers, general surfing.

    1) Asus Transformer Pad Infinity (preferred) or Transformer Prime.

ICS/JB is really good with a mouse+keyboard, especially with a good PDF reader and Chrome installed. It's as good as any small notebook for general content consumption.

Is there anything on the horizon that is worth waiting for?

Not AFAIK. The tablet market is pretty cool right now in Android land.

I really like my Galaxy Tab once it's been rooted and AOSP put on. If that's a route you'd be willing to take, that might be worth a look. The Asuses are quite good as well, though.

Let me know if you find any good PDF readers that make reading academic papers easier. What I really need is regular PDF annotations (so I can take them off the reader with the file), and something that reflows 2-column text for better readability would be a nice bonus.

I was actually going to post this a couple days ago. I was leaning toward the Asus Transformer. Amazon has refurbed ones for 309.
  • I'd just wait a little longer for the Nexus 10.
