Currently using CM10. Enjoy it. But interested in some others like AOKP(JellyBean), EuroSkank Jellybro(KANG) and AOKP Black Bean(Team Baked)

What are you guys using and why?

I use an optimized version of AOSP ICS for my phone. I had CM7.2 and then CM9 but love how smooth the experience is with AOSP (zomg highly optimized drivers). I'm hoping to get a Nexus sometime next year.

I got the noob guide to hacking my phone, thx @fatcat, but are these aftermarket firmwares better in any way, or just different? The tech nerd inside me wants to start poking around with my brand new phone, but the rationalist says don't be stupid your break it. Can anyone provide clarity?

Generally better, unless you're on AOSP already (which you aren't, unless you got a Nexus). Individual devices will vary on stability and developer involvement. I'd love to have CM10 or JB on my phone, but it can't really handle it.

I've been told that CyanogenMod is aweome, been meaning to try it out:

I used Eclipse for a long time before switching back to stock (having safestrap prevents me from using my phone to debug apps):

Lately I've sworn by AOKP, simply because I feel it gives me the best of CM10 and then some - sometimes with releases on a more regular basis to boot. The release of Jelly Bean seemed to bring with it at least 4 more viable options for custom setups, though.

To be honest, I don't have a reason for chosing it over any of the other available options at this point - each has their ups and downs. Regardless, it always seems like CM10/AOKP provide the best 'tweaker's paradise' you can get.
  • I've been using bigxie's plain ol rooted & deodexed Android ROMs since I got my Galaxy Nexus. They've treated me well. To be honest, I haven't seen a compelling reason to run some tweaked out ROM since upgrading to Jelly Bean... it has the features I want and it runs nicely, what more could a vegetable ask for?

I'm running CM10 nightlies on my galaxy nexus(toroplus), they've been all a guy could ask for. I was never able to keep one ROM on my phone for longer than a few days before this one.
