Diablo III Starter Edition?

HawkHawk Fla Icrontian
Hi all,
I'm looking for some input on this game.
Seems Blizz is giving the starter edition away for free to play.
I know some of you out there have played it.
Is it worth DLing and playing the starter edition.
I've read some of the info on it and I see it has a real money AH to buy stuff.
I'm just looking for a free game to have a little fun playing.
Is it a must join guild game or can you solo in it.
If you don't buy the real money AH armor/weapons/etc. Is it worth playing.
One other thing I'm not sure of. Does the view from above the characters stay above like that.
Or is it adjustable to player level?
Anyway, Just thinking about trying it out to occupy time.
Those of you that have played it. Let me know what you thought or think of it.
Thnx Hawk

Not sure what the starter edition does, but as to your other questions:
    You can solo it
No need to use the real money AH
    The view is always above/top-down
It's a pretty fun dungeon crawler in my opinion, although very item-grind dependent (some of which has been fixed by paragon leveling system)

Starter edition has the following restrictions:

    1. You can only play up to level 13.
    2. You only have access to ACT I of the content, less than a sixth of the overall gameplay.
    3. You have no access to the auction house, not money or gold.
    4. You can only play with other Starter Edition players.
    5. The game is a solo game, or co-op with up to 4 players.
    6. The game is only isometric third-person. There is no first-person view.

I think there are numerous free to play titles out there that give a better, not to mention more complete experience. Tribes: Ascend, Firefall, PlanetSide 2, Blacklight: Retribution and Stronghold Kingdoms come to mind.

Hawken and Mechwarrior Online are pretty fun, too. There's a crapton of good F2P games out there, it all depends on your genre preferences.
  • Yeah, anything "F2P" from Activision-Blizzard is going to be crippled significantly. Doubly so for Blizzard stuff. I just got an invite and code to come back to WoW for 10 days with your old characters and get MoP with it. Then I noticed the asterisk.
Yep. It's more than just cutting access to any raid content. They of course, didn't specify how severely crippled it is. Other than "you will need to actually buy our crappy expansion at full price to access most content." And the big deal about WoW going F2P a while back? Yeah - level 20 max and a bunch of other restrictions that make it a waste of time.

As folks have said, plenty better out there.

Hey Gnome, How's it going bud.
I've been around. Just haven't had much to say.
Trying to keep occupied with the economy such as it is.

Now to figure out which one to DL and play first. lol

DLing Darksiders first. Man, Steam sucks for DLing speeds.
    Low is 550 KB/S -- High is 1.1 MB/S. Average speed is 700-800 KB/S.
4+ hrs just to DL a game with 6.0 DSL.

I usually have incredible download speeds with Steam. It maxes out my 64mb connection and I can download huge games in minutes. Maybe you caught it on a busy day or something. Are you sure your Steam settings are correct? Setting you internet connection speed in the properties to be accurate actually helps.

6.0 DSL is theoretically only 600 KB/s maximum. 550 KB/s is very good, and you're profoundly lucky that you're getting 1.1MB/s.

Unless of course you meant 60Mbit DSL, then I'll just fuck right off.

Its bellsouth man i remember getting crap speeds on those line that havent been upgraded since the 70's
  • HawkHawk Fla Icrontian
    Yep, It's ATT 6.0 DSL. On average it's staying between 650 --875 KB/s.
It jumps up and down as it always has when DLing one of the steam games.
All settings are correct. I've tried resetting them to Atlanta instead of Miami.
No real change, maybe a slight bit slower.
Speed is set to cable/dsl 2M.
All the lines in this neighborhood have been replaced so they can give everyone the Uverse packages.
And I ran high speed cable into the house to the router/modem myself.
Guess it's not too bad for $44.00 a month for phone and 6.0 DSL.

Okay, well I hate to say it, but Steam ain't your problem there, bud :D

Then Steam is actually giving you more than the speeds you're paying your ISP to receive. :)
