Where do you go for game reviews?

Hi all,

I'm Esti, and I tend to haunt ICHQ more than the site, so I haven't met a lot of you, but I could really use your help on a project I'm part of in the UMich library school.

I'm working with the Computer and Video Game Archive at the University of Michigan to expand the resources they use to select materials for their collection. They're interested in all systems, vintage and cutting edge, so any suggestions you have for places to find quality reviews, descriptions, or other information about the games you're into would be great.

We're trying to find a broad set of sources for games and gaming culture, so I'll definitely be pointing the librarians here (I strongly suspect they'll just enjoy Icrontic for itself and for all of you, regardless of its application to their jobs!), but I'd love to be able to give them your recommendations as part of my project.

Thanks so much, looking forward to seeing your suggestions!

One of the coolest things that has happened in the world of video gaming in the last few years is Good Old Games. They started off as a company that took classics that were really good but maybe didn't run well (or at all) on modern computers (like DOS games), and fixed them so that they would work on modern PCs, thus bringing in some great older games to a new audience.

There's a lot of that going on in the industry; the technology window on games is surprisingly short, as the platforms and technologies evolve... And some games are so good they should be able to be enjoyed by future generations. Nintendo's Virtual Console, all these "Retro" packs from publishers on PSN and Xbox Live, PS1 "classics" on PS3, and so on.

  • For modern games browsing metacritic will give you the broadest selection of websites and blogs. - http://www.metacritic.com/game

For older platforms there are site's specifically tailored to those systems.

For Atari specific platforms, I've always liked Atari Age - http://www.atariage.com/system_reviews.html

The Nintendo Life Retro Reviews section is not archived that well, but the quality of content is pretty good. - http://www.nintendolife.com/retro/reviews

Don't forget good ole wikipedia - There is a wiki for just about everything, often pointing to links for sources for specific content. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BurgerTime

    GoG is a fantastic resource.

If you list out exact systems, we can provide links like cliff did for a few. GoG, as mentioned, is awesome and you'd certainly want to think about how Steam "revolutionized" the distribution model.

Is there any interest in emulators for old hardware e.g. C64? I suspect the legalities are something they wouldn't want to get mixed up in?...

As for game reviews, I still use metacritic as at least that points me to some of the larger game sites out there whose opinions I trust. It's a shame our own IC-Games site is alive no more it I'd point you there, being a former reviewer for them :-(

Our game site is a live and well. All the content is now simply funneled through icrontic.com for ease of navigation. There's no reason why tech and gaming should exist on separate websites.
