Accessing XP from a secondary drive

Hey guys, recently I upgraded a friends computer to windows 7 with a new hard disk and he came back to me saying he needed to access a program that was saved in an email attachment on the old OS's email client and no longer on the server. It was a rather long time ago so the installer isn't actually on the old drive anymore however all OS files are present. When trying to boot it as a kind of dual boot system the mouse and keyboard don't seem to work (nor do any USB ports for that matter) so I need to find an alternative. I was thinking it might be possible to boot it as a virtual machine but I've yet to find a way to do that. Any help would be appreciated.
