Then Microsoft XP would yell. However, many times there is a way around that issue. What you can do is tell it to install anyways.
So, there are two things you can do if you updated direct-x from microsoft before sticking the ATI disk in:
1. look at ATI's site in support for drivers that support the direct-x version you updated to that work with your card.
2. or reload XP, stick driver CD in and install drivers before updating, THEN update only to direct-X version that the drivers support.
2. is usually done if overriding the complaint-- you can tell the complaining dialog to ignore the lack of signed stuff -- but doing that can result in a mess if you have already updated Direct-X.
1. is best first choice as the drivers from ATI sometimes have direct-x related parts with them that will let card work if card can do what the most recent direct-x does.
If you know exactly what ATI card you have, let us know, we can help you figure out how to do 1, or even tell you if 1 is not likely to work, then you do 2. and override the complaint and then update and do not update direct-x beyond a certain point that card can handle. What version of Direct-X you can use is determined partly by card, partly by drivers.
Basicly, what happens when I build or rebuild an XP box, is I install XP, and if video is limited beyond use, than I get new drivers and if driver documents say it srivers support new direct-x I get new Microsoft direct-x of that version. If they say an earlier version, I stop upgrading at that version or get and sell a card that has drivers that DO support the newer direct-x if someone wants that Direct-x support enough to pay to have that support in hardware.
General rule, is fix only what is now broken as best as you can.
If you want to know what Direct-X is on your box, go to start|run and type
dxdiag
and tap the enter key on keyboard. Main screen of that program will tell you what Direct-X version is installed now.
to avoid problems, I tend to first install XP, then install latest drivers for card, then limit what Direct-X I upgrade to to driver limits of what they support in teh way of Direct-X.
You can get to ATI's site by going to http://www.ati.com/, then get into support, adn then choose to get drivers. Site will want to know your card specifcs. Then you can look for drivers for your operating system and choose ones most recent that are not betas -- betas are test drivers, only go to betas if the stable ones do not do what you want and the info about the betas says they do that thing you want done.
Drivers first, then direct-x upgrade from WindowsUpdate. Reverse, and XP will get stubborn or things might get broken and junky displays might result.
Direct-X 9.0 cannot be normally uninstalled. Only install an uninstallable Direct-X if you know the drivers and card support Direct-X. Tech support at ATI can tell you if a certain ATI card supports Direct-X 9.0 and what drivers to get to do that.
Note that cards made using ATI chips need not be completely ATI cards to ATI spec, so if ATI did not make your card we need to know who did and the model to help real well.
