FTL Infinte Space

So, I know a few of you at least have tried the SPESS Rogue-like FTL (also available on Steam)(maybe eventually available on Legos). If you haven't, it's a fantastic game if you're a fan of Awesome 16 bit soundtracks (at least it sounds like SNES-style chiptunes, I can't back that up with composition information), SPESS, Star Trek influenced (at least it seems to be) sort of things, Rogue-likes that are only sort-of roguelike and aren't insane (i.e. it's not like ADOM or Nethack) but are still challenging (i.e. it's not Pokémon Rescue Squad), or if you just like trying new and interesting indie games.

So, if you're still reading, I'll assume you're at least interested in the game, or have maybe played it for 400 hours. To you, I'd like to suggest a fantastic mod: FTL Infinte Space. I'll avoid spoilers about the game, but mechanically in vanilla you are chased by a rebel fleet, you make path decisions between sectors, and the game ends in a boss-fight. In Infinite Space, however, you are no longer running to keep ahead of rebels. Instead, you are an explorer, scouring the galaxy for new and interesting things. There is no need to rush out of the sector to avoid a massive wave of death, there's no massive ending boss fight, and you no longer have (or get) to choose where you end up next - it's totally random when you leave a sector. It also adds in a bunch of new encounters and some new equipment, as well as sprucing up the graphics a little bit (HD SPESS backgrounds are keen). While I like the original, after playing both I find the mod to be a much more interesting and enjoyable game. So yeah, give it a shot :)

The immediacy and the 'deadline' of the base game are what make it so good, I think. As a completionist, I'm always wanting to look into every system in every sector, but I can't. If I do that, I will lose. I have to pick and choose where to go, and never know if I missed something cool or crucial to my success.

I'll give Infinite Space a shot, anyway however. I mostly stopped playing FTL because I think I've seen all the permutations now. There are a finite number of random events, and once you know the best way to deal with each of them, the game loses a bit of sparkle. What I would really like is a DLC that adds a bunch of new possible events, and even some tough decisions to make now and again.

@CB I agree, a DLC would be fantastic. I also agree that the urgency of the encroaching army is a key element to the game, but honestly I got kinda tired of it after a while. Infinite Space is just more my pace; I prefer the role of an explorer, and you can't effectively explore in vanilla. I'm looking forward to seeing what your opinions on it are :)
