DietBet anyone?

I've been on MyFitnessPal for quite a while and it was very helpful in helping me stay accountable to the food I put in my mouth and lose weight before the surrogacy.

When I was pregnant I couldn't make MFP understand that I wanted to gain weight at a different rate than it offered and honestly it got to be too much for me to remember every day. Babby is gone now and while I've lost all the weight I put on during pregnancy (kinda proud of that, actually), I still have more to lose to get to where I'm comfortable with my size.

I've been using Endomondo for tracking my exercise (which, fantastically enough, links to MFP), but I'm thinking I need to step it up a bit. I need a bit more motivation than "I wanna look good in a Harley Quinn costume."

Enter DietBet. Friends bet that they can lose 4% of their starting weight in 4 weeks. For me, that's 1.6 pounds a week. Each player contributes an equal amount of money in hopes that they win either the whole pot or split it with the rest of the players that also lost 4% of their weight!

So, anyone game?

I'll get in on this. Is it app driven, or all on a site?

As far as I know it only has an app for the iPhone (HAHA!!), but you're not required to do anything on the site other than sign up, place your bet, log your start weight and then log your ending weight according to their guidelines. No food logging or weekly weigh-in.

Ok, so I went ahead and started a game. $25 buy-in (since that's my average sushi spend, I figured I could manage that. I didn't want it to be too painful the first time around) and we start April 15 (to give y'all time to decide if you want to play, have time to buy-in and allow me to start after my Vegas trip.)

    Wanna play??

Interesting. I might have to join.

  • The pot is already at $100! Plus, if any of you men out there want to do this, you've got a higher chance of winning due to the fact that men usually lose weight faster than women, and right now the competitors are ALL women.

Depending on your weight, 1% a week is extremely unhealthy. As a personal example, 1% a week for me is 33% faster than the maximum weekly loss that can be considered healthy.

You may win cash... but at what cost? Food for thought.
  • Weight should always be lost in a healthy manner, no matter what.

Yeah, 1.6lbs of weight loss (with more fat than muscle loss as possible) a week is completely doable and completely fine for a four week period. As your before eat/drink anything in the morning, butt-naked, on the same scale, post-pee/poo weight decreases by week just keep with the 1% of that week's weight (but, I'm pretty sure you're already aware of this) and you'll be even more badass ;) Good luck!

  • Week 1 (including the first WEEKEND) of the DietBet has come and gone. I'm up 3 pounds from my start weight and @mertesn has already lost 55% of the weight he needs to lose to win the game!

Y'all missed out on a TERRIFIC opportunity to take money from me.

@MomOfRose I wouldn't get too concerned about the gain. It took a good three weeks after starting my current eating plan before my weight actually started going down. I was losing body fat the whole time though, so I knew it was working.

...I'm probably going to hit my DietBet goal weight this week or next. Got some good incentive too: I'm in two other games that started the same day.

  • @Mertesn I know I'm losing body fat because I'm losing inches all over, but it's very frustrating to see the scale numbers go up instead of down.

I'm also in another game that started the same day as mine. And I started a new one this week, so I'll have incentive to keep going past the original 4 weeks.

In the long run, I'll be healthier, but in the short run: I want that money!! :D

I really hope that is a play on a Princess Bride quote and I'm not just hearing things in my head.

Sounds like you're replacing fat with muscle, which will increase your ability to burn calories faster. It also sounds like soon you'll be able to pick @UPSLynx up and throw him great distances ;)

I'm still betting that you'll make your goal weight. Either way, beers on me at Expo :D Celebratory or whatever the opposite is.

It's not so much "going against me" as much as it is "taking more shares of the prize pool".
  • Ok, so we're coming up on the second weekend of this challenge. As of this morning, I'm down 0.6 pounds from when the game started on April 8. Not a whole lot of weight loss.

    BUT!

I'm also down 6.75 inches all around, with the majority of it coming off my hips and waist; nearly 2 inches from each!

Kind of embarrassing to show these pictures here, but I know it'll help with my motivation and accountabiility.

So the first pic, April 2, was just before my trip to Vegas. I ate a "bit" more than I should have that weekend, so my second picture, one week into the challenge, I definitely look bigger.

But I'm starting to lose the bulge on my right side from where Chloe (the not-my-baby baby) liked to stretch out and my "mommy jell-o" below my belly button is starting to shrink.

I'm fairly certain I will not win this challenge as I still have a little over 6 pounds to lose in about 2 weeks. But, hey. I'm getting healthy. That's the point, right?

  • Blech! What a waste! 17 days have come and gone - and I've lost a whopping 0.8 lbs. My weekends are killing my progress, but I can't just keep carrying fruit around with me wherever I go and I haven't managed to figure out a way to get a decent workout squeezed into Saturdays or Sundays.

    This sucks.

Weekends are my biggest problem as well. The lack of structure makes it difficult to eat what and when I'm supposed to. I've found that Quest Bars make an excellent and filling snack or small meal that can be easily carried around (Cinnamon Roll and Strawberry Cheesecake are particular favorites). Freeze dried fruits and vegetables might be a good alternative as well.

As for exercise, I actually take the weekends off, but that's mainly because my primary workout is karate and by Friday my body needs a couple of recovery days.
