ARGHHH, The Tinkers have me

I seem to have a rash of Tinkers (is there a cream for this?).
It isn't too bad on the AMD boxes. But my 900P3 dies running them. It will take 4 days to finish one.
One the bright side, I have wus to run and I am over 100pts/day for 5 in a row now. I am back on track.

Posted: Sun Feb 08, 2004 12:55 pm Post subject: Rebalancing towards more Gros

We've been trying to use the performance fraction to better balance the assignment of WUs between Tinker and Gromacs. We need to give fast machines Gro and slower Tinkers to keep all machines completing WUs in time. This is still early and it will take some time to get it right (as always -- these things are complex). We've made another revision on how we do things to try to keep FAH running smoothly.

In order to sort things out and to help give people some control, I've set the adv-methods min perf frac to 0. So,

    - if you're new to FAH or don't have a preference (or don't want to bother): just keep the client going and the AS will try its best to assign you the right WUs

    - if you know what you want and you want Gros, keep adv-methods on and you should get them

Finally, I've added several new Gro servers to adv methods to keep them available.

This likely won't be the last revision of how we use the performance fraction, but should help give donators some more control, while not assigning Gro to machines which shouldn't get it.

Maybe this explains my dip in points the last few days.
Though, 2.3GHz AXPs and a 2.133GHz p4 should be able to pump out WUs fast enough to satisfy the minimum time requirement of the fraction, right? Oh well . . . like I said to mmonnin, perhaps the best way for me to solve the point problem is to add more boxes!

I'll take all the Tinkers they want to give me - I think I have 7 folding frames right now. This comlicated formula Vijay Pande is using might be fubar when you factor in the work units started on one machine and finished on another. With a jump drive and volunteers doing F@H on school and business boxes, then bringing the folders home to upload must really mess things up. I only do that with one computer - my neighbors - but it happens. Jack
