Phoenix/Firebird 0.8 is out but the name changes (again)..

edited February 2004 in Science & Tech
The mozzy juggernaut carries on with release 0.8 of the increasingly popular FireFox...

Wait? FireFox.. surely you mean "Firebird" or even (if you remember back that far) "Phoenix". Nope, its name change time again in open source land. Apparently, an open source project of the same name has laid claim to Firebird first... so FireFox is the NEW name for the browser...
[blockquote]The new release also marks a name change for the new browser, which was previously known as Mozilla Firebird. “We are pleased to release a new preview version of Mozilla Firefox,” commented Mitchell Baker, President of the Mozilla Foundation. “To avoid overlap with another open source project, we have also decided to changed the name of this product from Mozilla Firebird to Mozilla Firefox.”[/blockquote]
What do you make of that malarky?

Name changes are often done in software world. and perhaps more in open source than in MS world where names are copyrighted. Its part of gettign along. Yes, someone else had a product that did different things than what Mozillas firebird project did, and there was confusion as a result among users who went to wrong place and looked and got info about wrong project or just grabbed and did not even get a browser at all. The "other" firebird is not a browser.
Lets say you went to the mother index of most opensource stuff ( http://www.sourceforge.net/ ), knew to look for firebird, and found a totally different piece of software-- confusion would result until you hunted around and found the right thing. Firefox is not a project name in use, and the Mozilla folks do foxy things with coding to get something as compact as Firefox to work.

Phoenix was also used when the thing that is now called Firefox was named Phoenix, that is why it became Firebird. They changed it again because folks working on Firebird got lots of "where's the browser" questions. It is a getting along with each other thing.

If the name of the browser is Mozilla Firebird then it'd be a bit obvious that if you're looking for firebird and you get a Mozilla plastered to the front of it you've got the wrong thing.

Whatever it's called, it's still a sweet browser.

It is indeed. I still like Opera 7.2.3 better, once you get used to the plethora of things accessed by right-clicking, though. Without using right mouse button, you hunt all over menus for functions. Firefox, Mozilla, and Thunderbird all have some interesting right click options also. The context menus are very tight in all of them, what you right click on determines menu content heavily.

The website is working now, but earlier you could get it from www.suprnova.org through bittorrent and it was insanely fast. I got it around six hours ago from there bcause www.mozilla.org was down and i got about 120KB/s which is great for bittorrent.
