'Longhorn' status roundup

edited February 2004 in Science & Tech
Here is a roundup of three articles posted on the web recently, looking at the progress and development schedule of the next version of Windows, 'Longhorn'. Some have speculated that even the Microsoft penned 2006, might be an overly optimistic date for the release of the highly anticipated operating system.
Microsoft's (Bumpy) Road to Longhorn

[blockquote]In a new report, the Kirkland, Wash.-based research firm said Microsoft is facing a "product gap" over the next two years without a major new release regarding its flagship Windows operating system and Office productivity suite.

Longhorn could take a long time to land: study

[blockquote]Microsoft is likely to issue an interim client version of Windows late next year to fulfill the expectations of those who have signed up for its software assurance scheme and also to drive sales of new PCs, the tech firm Gartner says.

If this eventuated, then the release of Longhorn, the codename for the next version of Windows, would slip to at least the second half of 2007, Gartner said in a special report in which it analysed the software giant's licensing practices, security efforts, and plans for Longhorn and Yukon (the next version of SQL Server).

Hillel Cooperman and Tjeerd Hoek Talk Longhorn (Part Two)

[blockquote]Joe: In terms of the user interface, how do you balance subtlety with learnability? The obvious example is Paul's favorite example, the Mac OS X "jumping icon" on the Dock [where an application that wants to notify you causes its Dock icon to jump up and down, indefinitely, until you address it]. Tell me when this gets annoying [bounces hand up and down in front of his face].

Hillel: Ah, this is like the guy who made the video ... "Jack - f#$%ing terrier"!
