EDIT: Actually, after refreshing myself on markdown syntax, the real problem is that the editor encouraged me to flip-flop the two fields. Specifically, after inputting the URL, it highlights the text in the parenthesis for editing, suggesting that is where the text of the link would go however it is the text in the square brackets that make up the link text. Likely the points system, and I suspected that as well. Definitely not user error.
So it's not a bug if it functions that way by design? (though I don't think quotes should be points limited, just outside links)

Yeah, I made it so new users can use full formatting again. It's a stupid feature on a small site.
