NTLDR is missing

I'm installing a hard drive and it is saying NTLDR is missing. I formatted it to NTFS? I have the BIOS set to first load from the cd. I am trying to install XP. What do I have to do to make it load?

Ok, first, when it gets to reboot point, let it boot from HD.
Take a good look at your install CD, make sure it is not scratched also. If it is scratched you can get corrupt file copy at install time, and sometimes if minor the errors will not be caught until the install is trying to continue from HD boot.

Given your error, probably start over one time, and if you get the same error and are booting from HD and not CD after reboot after files are copied, then check the HD for errors. If HD checks good, run memtest86 in all tests mode.

XP install transitions to HD to finish install, so letting the thing boot one extra time too many from CD can give you a mess.

OK I tried XP again and then tried 98, it takes 98. How much space, if any is wasted on the hard drive by first loading 98 then upgrading to XP?

You have only one hard drive correct? And your sure the bios is set correctly to boot from that drive? No matter where you install XP to... and it can be almost any partiton on any drive... XP puts the 5 boot files including ntldr on the FIRST IDE DRIVE and first partiton on that drive to boot.

Is the XP disc you are using a full version from Microsoft? Or is it an upgrade, or a manufacturers OEM disc?

9/10 times when I get this problem its the memory. Strange that 98 installed fine though. Nevertheless, I suggest you swap out your memory and try it with a different module.

    Cheers

9/10 times when I get this error, I have accidentally left a disk in the floppy drive and am tearing my hair out looking for a technical problem when actually it's something simple.

    Yeah same here.
So when ever I get that error that is the first thing I check

i would say as try in another machine, bet it works, could be dat its the drive and not the disc, ive had that before, simply using my top drive instead of the bottom i can get it to work.
