Windows NT 4 & 2000 Source Code leaked

edited February 2004 in Science & Tech
It has been reported that the source code of Windows NT and Windows 2000 has leaked onto the web.

[blockquote]It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak. And this leak could be a very big problem around the world.
[/blockquote]
[blockquote]This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.
[/blockquote]

As well as XP. XP is based off the Win2k kernal.

Linux is looking more and more desireable for me these days... Thank god for Norton and a Linksys Router.

    :(

At least I'll feel safer with Linux.. In two weeks, using Windows will feel like using a busted condom.

Bahh. this is just media hype. First of all, it's probably barely true. Secondly, even if the windows source code is leaked, so what? It will in the end, make windows even more scrutinzed and perhaps make it even more secure in the end.

I call "BS" on the whole thing.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. The story did make me think about the possibilities of what could come of it should the story turn out to be true. One would think that the so called security updates would have fixed many of the holes in the programming though. Should there be some merit to the story I think it will be one to follow. The press will probably plaster it all over the news for us.

Ok... BS yes and no... the source was not leaked.. It was given out by MS themselves..

MS has a program where they now give the source code to windows to governments. They recently gave the entire source for windows to the Russian government so that they can alter it as they need. Now that code could very well have been leaked but as of yet I have not seen the code really available anywhere.

The US government runs 2K also. Thankfully the cold war is over. :)

I heard from an associate who was crazy enough to actually attain these codes that the code he had was primarily made up of codes for paint. Until the codes are all found and compiled, I'm not sweating it too much. But, just to be on the safe side, is there any chance a non MS firewall would provide some protection from potential attacks? If so any suggestions on one?

I saw the damn thing on Kazaalite ressurection yesterday afternoon. I was looking for legal linux isos, by the way, but got curious and did a search. Sure enough, the page filled.

For free: zonalarm. Otherwise Norton internet security. Or a hardware firewall. I would go with hardware if you're really worried but the others might help. I hope.

Did a search for it on shareaza and it's there to. Or it least files that CLAIM to be the source. Not that i'm downloading it. Even if i could find it i wouldn't understand it. So the question remains, should we be worried or not? Sure linux is open source but linux is, as far as i understand, much different from windows so what should we make of this?

you guys: Seriously, don't worry. Having the source code to windows is not gonna do anybody any good. Secondly, even if it does prove out that a remote exploit was discovered because some hacker got the source and wrote a script kiddie program for all the dorks to download (which happens anyway) then MS will just write a patch like they usually do. Third, the hacker who finds a remote exploit in the source is a highly skilled, highly talented programmer, and I promise that he or she doesn't give a crap about your home computer. They are after bigger fish.
