What is the first piece of gear you became obsessed with obtaining in any game?. I remember playing Everquest and for the longest time trying to obtain the Dragoon Dirk that was dropped in crushbone by Ambassador D'Vinn. Once I finally obtained it It was obsolete because I level too high trying to get it, But I kept it as a reminder. This was before the lvl 90 revamp. Makes me want to Play the Original EQ again

One solid month of grinding. Started it when my first character ever hit 80, back when WotLK was current. We switched to Alliance about a year later and I was unable to use my poor dragonhawk anymore, so in order to keep with my blood elf motif, I then had to acquire:

The only thing I can think of was the Gold Chocobo in Final Fantasy VII and the Knights of the Round materia that resulted from it. It was the only time I ever bought a strategy guide for a video game (this was right before the internet was useful for this sort of thing).
There really hasn't been anything since, other than maybe the legendary cloak in Mists of Pandaria, but that was obtainable by everyone, so it wasn't really an "obsession".
Final Fantasy Tactics' Chirijiraden (last samurai sword)
or stealing the Masamune from Marquis Elmdor (which can't be done in the fft remake, War of the Lions)
Froglok Bonecaster Robe from EverQuest. Also the Orb of Mastery, the Magician epic quest from EverQuest (each class had their own legendary questline).
I did a 49-hour continuous camp to get one of the items needed for the Orb of Mastery.

Somewhere in the depths of LoEI posts there is a post where I shared a screenshot as soon as I got it.

I don't know why but having a full complete "natural" set of runes was very important to me. (found by drops only)
