This is a complicated game with a steep learning curve. Highly recommended that you do not skip the tutorial, and you watch a few "howto PS2 for noobs" videos on YouTube.
Particularly how to spawn, change continents, use certifications, etc.
I read a couple of tutorials and they recommend new players start out with engineer or medic to earn experience faster.
These classes can earn xp from repairing and healing.
I was playing engineer last night and it was pretty fun. I found a pick up squad and followed some MAXs around dropping ammo and repairing them. It worked pretty well for earning quick xp.
I've played the original planetside and the new one since beta...
Go NC because of killer tanks and deadly shotguns!
Also as @Zanthian has said, go medic or engineer to gain some quick exp for levelling. Recon can be pretty sweet once you have a decent rifle and NC maxes are absolute beasts in close quartets (with two shotguns obviously!)
