CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 2400g unless someone knows a good sale price on a 7 2700

MB: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming

SSD: Samsung EVO 860 500 GB

RAM: 16 GB 2400 MHZ (Crucial)

Video Card: none

PSU: 550 W 80% Gold

Case, ATX supporting.

Total Budget: $660

I will be making graphics, logos, on Corel Draw. I tried the GIMP on Kubuntu, could not get effects I wanted to have-- see johnslittlehangout.com 's banner of an early draft.

I MIGHT try some gaming also, and this will become a dual boot Kubuntu/Windows 10 machine about 9 months from now.

I have fun configuring machines and getting them to do more and more, so do not be afraid to discuss ideas.

I don't have recommendations on parts, I'm afraid, but wanted to say nice job on the site draft and graphics! Reminds me of when I started building websites waaaay back in the geocities days.

Are you planning on posting some of your photography there?

I'm not seeing a strong reason to go with more than Vega 11 integrated graphics.

@NiGHTS : probably some samples of my stuff, but what little I have is archachically stored. I think I will stick to web banner samples.

@drasnor : here I thought the motherboard had graphics capability--thanks for the tip. I will have to think more. do you know of a Ryzen gen2 series CPU with graphics AND 6 cores/12threads?

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

    AMD Ryzen™ 5 2400GE with Radeon™ RX Vega 11 Graphics

this is a gen2 ryzen 5 2400ge with graphics vega 11 and 6 cores also for processing. saw it on AMD's site-- anyone know the going price.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

AMD Ryzen 5 2400G is $119.99 on Amazon.

  • ThraxThrax 🐌 Austin, TX Icrontian

If you're not going to be playing many games, the Ryzen 5 2400G would be a good choice for you. You wouldn't need to buy a video card, then.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

True, I am not much of a gamer yet. Thanks.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

I have a monitor, not that.

    so a barebones:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 2400G

    case: NZXT H500

the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming motherboard

RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX 16 GB

    6PSU: 650 W 80+gold modular PSU

    total 509.74

O/S issue: You can run kubuntu (linux) until the system is fleshed out and then put Windows on it. This quite legally lets you build a bare-bones system, add parts, then make the jump into a multi-boot machine.

AMD Ryzen 5 3400G 4-core, 8-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Radeon RX Graphics

    @Thrax Two questions:

Is the above chip a 2nd Gen Ryzen?

Is RX graphics better and newer than Vega 11?

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

The reason for the questions is that Amazon has the chip above for 149.99.

@Straight_Man Compared to the 2400G, that processor has about +10% CPU performance and +15% graphics performance. It's the same basic architecture between the 2400G and 3400G, but the manufacturing technology has been optimized to achieve higher performance and lower power on the 3400G. It will also run cooler, due to changes in how the heatspreader is mounted to the processor die.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

    Thank you.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

ok, modify the first list to include the 2400G Ryzen and no video card. PSU will be 550W instead of 650W.

    the rest is easy:

    case: NZXT H500

the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming motherboard I have

RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX 16 GB

    6PSU: 650 W 80+gold modular PSU est is easy

    case: NZXT H500

the ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming motherboard

RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX 16 GB

    PSU: 550 W 80+gold modular PSU

I have a spare SSD I can use and a good monitor.

@Linc side note, this web site is good working with Firefox in Kubuntu, except that it wants to use control commands to cut, copy, and paste.

  • drasnordrasnor Starship Operator Hawthorne, CA Icrontian

That's probably a Kubuntu thing; KDE has weird hotkeys.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

yuppers.. is firefox, which in ports to linux and macOS retains it's preferences for using control key sequences. People on macs with Kubuntu beware! :)

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

I will be going with the Ryzen 5 2400G, more people use it with the motherboard I bought.

I do not have a keyboard spec yet. what is good?

  • primesuspectprimesuspect Beepin n' Boopin Detroit, MI Icrontian

Entirely subjective. I love mechanical keyboards and I'm very happy with my Ducky ONE, but a lot of people hate mechanical keyboards because they're noisy and clicky.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

I ended up with a cheap one for now but will get a Ducky when I can afford it.

  • AlexDeGruvenAlexDeGruven Wut? Meechigan Icrontian

I have the Drevo Excalibur with the non-clicky (but still louder than membrane) switches in the 84-key layout and I adore it. Feels great and isn't obnoxiously loud.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

Thank you, I got a Logitech USB corded one, and my mouse is USB corded also.

Also, I found a Thermaltake 600 W power supply and case on Amazon.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

Everything has arrived. Building/assembly later this week-- have Ubuntu installer ready also.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

Well, had to order some adapter cables and a Type 1 fan, and some Super Glue.

  • Straight_ManStraight_Man Geeky, in my own way Naples, FL Icrontian

    umm, still building it.

Gave it to a tech to debug setup. One bad stick of RAM had kept it from booting. It is running with 1 8 GB stick for now.

I will put more RAM into it later-- lots more RAM.

Well it is folding at a medium usage and is stable-- at 75 F. And I am surfing at the same time, and GIMP is open. I will put another 8 GB in it when the stick arrives, but Crucial ran out before processing the order.

I have the 2400G running at 3927 Mhz, RAM at 2497 (normally 2400) Mhz. Stock voltages. RAM settings are mostly stock.
