From the reports getting posted online users of the Sony SZ2 laptops are finding that their new toy is not a Intel T2300, but a T2300E. These processors sport all but one similarity which is VT "Virtualization Technology" support. Sony's site since users started noticing this issue now states that Virtualization Technology isn't supported, while still maintaining in multiple places that the CPU is a T2300, without the extra E. ATI can't seem to makeup its mind in regards to it new R580+ chip. The release date has changed from ATI's agenda of September 14th to August 23rd. My guess is ATI wants something new on the market to meet head to head with NVIDIA’s new 7950GT, but don't be surprised if we don't see these cards in bulk quantities until mid September. ATI's partners have the X1950 XTX floating around already within the channel it is just a few more days until we see these bad boys in the light of day. Add comment
A few slides have hit the web disclosing a few new toys rolling out of NVIDIA. We have the 7900GS which will be based on a lower clocked G71 chip and should be a good contender with ATI's X1900 series. We don't have exact specs on this new card, but we figure it will be around the 7900GT range in performance. NVIDIA also has a budget card rolling out under the flagship name 7500GT. We expect this new card to be cheaper than the current 7600 series and to perform slightly slower. Add comment
Dell's notorious customer support operation seems set to implode under the weight of millions of complaints following the huge 'exploding battery' recall. Dell’s response has been to set up a hotline, in a bid to drive the battery callers away from its already beaten & battered customer support teams. However the average waiting time, listening to classical music, to get to a human is now 30 minutes. Add comment
NVIDIA looks to have a new king of the hill before the launch of the G80 core DX10 graphic cards. The Geforce 7950GT is priced at just $299 and it is scheduled for the market in mid September. Intel has shown that the entire Pentium 4 architecture will be laid to rest by February of 2007. The massive funeral will play host to Intel's Celeron D, Pentium 4, Pentium D, Pentium 4 XE & Extreme Edition CPU's. Most of these processors will fall off the charts starting at the end of this month, but will ultimately be put to rest at the end of Q1 2007. Add comment
According to AMD, its Fabs are taping out the first Quad-core CPU's based on their new K8L architecture. Now don't get too excited as a CPU usually takes a good 18 months from this stage to hit the mainstream. But we can always hope AMD will keep being aggressive and push these chips out sooner than later. Add comment
AMD has kept its word and has launched its Socket F Opteron chips. The new Socket brings DDR2 to AMD's server market and not much more. The new line of CPU's will all be dual core, and will run a bit faster, cooler, and on less power. AMD changed the naming convention a bit as the 8xx goes to 82xx, 2xx to 22xx, and 1xx ends up at 12xx. Pricing is about where it should be, the 8218 is $2149, 2218 is $873 and the lowly 1218 is $749.
