NV40, R420 street dates revealed?

The Radeon X800 Pro will reportedly be followed by a Radeon X800 XT as early as May 31, suggesting that ATI may not be altogether confident that the X800 can hold the graphics performance crown without a quick refresh. Of course, NVIDIA may have a GeForce 6800 Ultra waiting in the wings, too. [/blockquote] [link=http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2018]Read more[/link] Add comment

Intel Reverse-Engineered AMD64

It has been reported that after investigating the instruction sets used by 64-bit chips from AMD and Intel, an industry analyst has concluded that Intel reverse-engineered the AMD64 instruction set to create its own 64-bit microprocessor architecture. [blockquote]Tom Halfhill, an analyst at In-Stat/MDR in San Jose, said Monday that he had compared the instruction sets of AMD's 64-bit chips, called AMD64, with the 64-bit extensions to be used in the Intel Xeon processor and future desktop chips. The smoking gun, Halfhill said, was Intel's choice to mimic a decision AMD made in its early Opteron designs, and later reversed. Infineon to cut back 50% on DDR chips

Infineon Technologies will reduce its DDR supply by around 50% in April from 50 million 256Mbit-equivalent units in March, according to sources in the industry. If true, supply in the global DRAM market is set to tighten even further. [blockquote]Rumors suggest that Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP) have been buying large amounts of DRAM chips in Taiwan. Sources at companies that buy from Infineon pointed out that some of the DRAM supplier’s salespersons have been taking early Easter holidays because of the lack of DRAM chips. Intel to wait before unleashing 64-bit Prescott

It has been reported that Intel is determined to work with the industry first and is in no hurry to enable the 64-bit capability of it's Prescott processors. [blockquote]According to our sources, Intel feels the need for 64-bit computing in the desktop enviornment but they don't want to do experiments with the consumers at this point. The current 64-bit technology from Intel is being used for high-end databases and transactions. Intel is currently focusing on their Itanium processors, which are designed for high-end, enterprise level tasks, sources claim. XP Reloaded Details Still Sketchy

It has been reported that Microsoft doesn't plan to ship XP Reloaded as an interim OS release. Instead, the company is still wrestling with how to market and package an OS that's changed dramatically in the 3 years since the company first released it. [blockquote]Before that can happen, however, Microsoft has to release XP SP2, which will ship in June. Plans for distributing SP2 to customers are still up in the air, however. For example, will the company replace the current XP retail boxes with XP SP2 boxes? I think so, although most XP licenses are sold with new computers. The plans for XP SP2 will affect XP Reloaded, and no one knows how Microsoft will spin XP as we get closer to the 2004 holiday season.
