Best Of

Everyone knows the best Game Over song that exists, of course.

First off, The Neverhood. KY of Vinesauce has been playing this beauty of a game again, recently, and I'd forgotten how weird and whimsical the soundtrack for the game is, silly voice samples and all.

(Side note, if you've never played The Neverhood and have the patience for point-and-clicks, I'd highly recommend giving it a shot.)

I saw a couple of songs posted from New Vegas, above, but I really feel like just the Fallout Soundtracks in general are worth mentioning. Before Fallout 3 and New Vegas brought us radio stations capable of blasting Butcher Pete and Mad About the Boy until your eyes pop out of your head, the BGM for Fallout 1 and 2 is pretty great even if I'm not personally a fan of the first two games otherwise. Real haunting, ambient stuff, very fitting.

I was actually really pleased when I found out that they brought back a lot of old BGM tracks from Fallout 1 and 2 into New Vegas for those times that you're on a break from listening to the sugary-sweet voice of Mr. New Vegas (and let's be honest, you just can't quit Mr. New Vegas).

Also, it would be an absolute crime to have an OST thread and NOT mention the soundtrack to one of the best games of all time.

I really don't have to say much. The music speaks for itself, and it REALLY set the bar in the Playstation era for this sort of thing.

Castlevania in general has great music. So much so that, of course, Konami is not the least bit shy about re-using old themes in newer games, just redone by newer composers. Heck, even "Lost Painting" in CSTON is an arrangement of "The Old Sinking Sanctuary" from Castlevania: Bloodlines (Or Castlevania: The New Generation if you're european and unfortunate enough to have the relatively sterilized version of that game). Someone actually put a video together comparing the original and two of the other versions (why it doesn't mention Lost Painting is lost on me, but whatever).

Again, though. This is nothing new to anyone that's a giant nerd Castlevania fan. I suppose on that note, I should probably just throw up the Castlevania: Bloodlines OST here. I really feel like it's somewhat underrated and gets lost amongst the Vampire Killers, Beginnings, and Bloody Tears. Even if it's the OST that gave us "Iron Blue Intention". And "Calling From Heaven" is an amazing track that Konami's woefully never taken advantage of again.

Ok, so now let's dial back a bit. Ninja Gaiden for the NES has a crazy good soundtrack that folks don't give a lot of credit to.

Every time I heard that first stage theme, it got me pumped to die repeatedly to birds. And of course, 15:23 on that video is another one that almost everyone that's played this game remembers dying to birds to seriously fuck birds in this game.

Another one you can't have an OST thread without is the original Streets of Rage. This OST is so deliciously late-80s-to-early-90s that it's practically a time capsule, and it uses the Genesis instrumentation to it's fullest potential, to the point where it's actually difficult to re-arrange without it sounding almost entirely like the original.

I'd put more down right now, but I've already spent long enough making this post, so I'll save the rest for another one.
