XP Taskbar Hourglass

edited February 2004 in Science & Tech
When I start my computer into XP and am presented with a desktop, I place my cursor over the taskbar, and get an hourglass. It lasts for about a minute or so and then reverts back to normal. Also - IE tries to detect the proxy settings everytime that I use it. Any ideas?

In IE, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings. Disable the "Automatically Detect.." and "Use A Proxy Server..." checkboxes.

When my computer starts and it arrives at the desktop, the files finish loading and then the taskbar has an hour glass for about a minute or so and then reverts back to normal.

Now the hourglass is no more, and when I move the pointer over the taskbar, it doesn't respond for about a minute or so. I think that my desktop is partially being loaded, pauses for about a minute or so, and then continues loading.

Check out how many processes you have running, that can slow the whole process down.

Good link to give you an explanation for just about anything you can find in your Task Manager.

If you don't need it running, kill it, then your boot ups won't take so long

Cleaning out the C;\windows\prefetch folder helps too
