Pentium IV 1500 running slow

edited March 2004 in Hardware
hey all,

I've been reading about this somewhere in this forum, but I couldn't find a solution. When I first got my comp I could play all games with no problems. After a while I got this CPU goin up at 100 and every now and then my games go choppy n stuff (every 3 minutes or so). It doesn't only happen with new games, even worms 1 goes slow. I really miss playing games snif snif. I runned scans for trojans did virus scans with norton and had spyhunter scanning my comp. I just optimised with norton. (speed disk... wutevah) Got the latest drivers for my videocard... Its a geforce 2 though.. and uhm... yeah well i dunno what to do next. Does defrag work to speed up my comp? Maybe its my memory thats just 256 or sumthing. But at first I didn't have these issues at all. Well if anyone could help i'd be very thankful :)

512 will really help. Run Disk cleanup as well.

I still call spyware. Try running HiJackThis and post the output here.

Buy some ram, throw away the compaq restore cd, format and get a copy of XP Pro. That should solve it. :D
  • edited February 2004
hmmm if thats the only way to solve it ;) but of couwse i'd rather not.

    Format.
  • edited February 2004
you should be able to use the compaq restore disk solely to put the OS back on. Just look for the i386 folder on the disk.

Although highly unlikely, it's also possible that it's overheating and the P4's thermal protection is kicking in.

Run a disk cleanup, then defragment the drive.
  • edited February 2004
Is disk clean up a program? Or should i just do that manually? And @ tefleming : You mean I can put windows back on without losing everything on my hd?

AFAIK most if not all restore disks have an option to just simply overwrite and not delete. Just read carefully the options. If you're not really sure, just write them down, abort and ask here.

hmm well nuttin has helped so far. But Thank you all for helping if there arent any other suggestions ;):) tis appreciated

first off you're totally infested with crap, if those programs can't clean them off, you need to format to get your machine clean again. second of all, you need to get a better vid card. a geforce 2 is not gonna cut it for these newer games anymore.

Disk Cleanup is a limited use program, but it will get the most comman aggregation(gatherings of gradual crud accumulation) of junk off your box.

    It does three things:

Cleans internent temp files off box.

    Empties the Windows temp directory.

    It does it reasonably safely.

When you are done, especially with Me or earlier, defrag the HD. If this is aslow box, it may take overnight to defrag, but you will see a performance gain if you do not have malware on the box.

Thanks for coming by and asking, that is what Tech is all about, we all learn things by asking and doing.
