After update driver and choosing the default 'Locate automatically' option, it looks then says 'cannot continue, there isn't a better driver'
It won't let me do it!

Bothered, dont click on 'locate automatically', go to install from a list or specific location, dont search, untick show compatble hardware, and choose Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC.

Ah ha, Did that, rebooted, found new hardware, you need to reboot, PC froze. Reset button was the only way out. Rebooted and disc check ran and changed loads of things on the C drive, 4/5 ATI and lots of folding stuff. Then it started and found new hardware again but let me click 'restart' ran disc check again but only changed a few things. It's running again now but I think it's put everything back as it was.

Well after running my PC as an 'Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC' for the last week or so. I've found my computer would just freeze 2 or 3 times a day. 90% of the time it would come out of it after about 30 seconds, but the other 10% of the time it would require a restart. I've since moved back to running it as an 'ACPI Uniprocessor PC' and the problem has gone. So, yeah, not so good for me after all. Just a FYI.

    Cheers

Tried it on my laptop (2.4 P4, Clevo i845e motherboard, ddr, etc.) and it seems to run noticeably faster... haven't had any stability problems yet either.

Same thing happened to me. Looks like this tweak is picky :(

Thanks Missileman!!! I have been having 2 problems for a while. 1) Sound would sometimes start crackling horribly during certain games, Vietcong and Call of Duty. 2) Setting folders to remember settings, such as icons, thumbnails etc. wouldn't keep. It would just change into some format I did not want. But now everything is better. The games no longer crack and the folder settings remain correct. Thanks a lot dude, big, big help!! :usflag:

Okay so let me tell you guys why I love SM so much (even though I rarely have anytime to browse the forums).

For about the last 2 months I have been getting random crackling noises coming from my speakers. So after I got some christmas money I bought myself a new set, Creative T3000's (better than my old 20W cheap-o's). So they have been working kickass for a week now but then today I started to hear some random noises again. I thought maybe it was coming from those stupid ads AIM has going, so I signed off to see. Unfortunatly they showed up again.

Being a resourceful chap I googled the problem, and what was the #1 hit? SM archive of this thread. What can I say? Freakin' awesome... big thanks to all involved in this problem and the site as a whole.

Hey gang, Was wondering if anyone could tell me what the PMC Flash chip that comes with the NF7-S V2.0 is. It comes loose in a package with the MB. I'm assumming that it's a chip you change out with one on the MB for flashing the bios. Also, There's nothing in the manual refering to it. Then again you know what assuming does. Please don't flame me on this....I've been using Asus MB's for a long time now and the only other board I've worked on lately was the ECS for inlaws. Thnx for replies.

I know this thread is a million years old, but the info here just helped my old NF7-S v2 keep on trucking at a whopping 511.2 FSB.

Oh man. That's awesome that you still have one. Also, you bumped a six year old thread, for which you get an achievement :D

    Also, welcome to Icrontic.

I still have my old NF-7 system. It's been sitting in a box for the past couple years. Unlocked Barton 2500+, 2 GB ram, X800 Radeon GPU, a big (at the time it was built) 400 watt power supply, etc.

And it has XP Home with IE6 on it!:D

I was thinking of starting it up again someday, my Dad says he might want a computer and I could let him use it. He's never had one.

    @ Prime, thanx!

    @ Tim:

Go for it, mine runs great, better in many ways than much more "powerful" systems.

Here are my specs if you want to replicate...took lots of trial and error to arrive at this.

Ive actually had it running 2.5gb of memory at 400fsb, which is not supposed to be possible and Ive gotten the processor upto over 2.8ghz. But the most all around performance has been as it is below. If I got rid of one of the video cards and switched to just IDE drives I might even be able to get the machine faster but I like my peripherals.

Antec Nine Hundred Two case Abit NF7-S v2.0 Taipan -=Merlin=- D27 Bios

Talking about the NF-7 mods now reminds me of when I was using my NF-7, and was reading about people modding the Abit BP-6 over at bp6.com, I think it was.

We speak about the NF7 in good ways, but since my main PC has a problem and the motherbord is being shipped out for replacement, I had to unbox my old NF7 after it sat in storage for nearly 3 years.

It's a slow, miserable POS! My main PC absolutely stomps it, and it isn't even all that high end (E7300 Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 4870, XP Home). The NF7 system (2500+ Barton @ 2.2, 2 GB RAM, X850 Pro 256 MB video), is actually WORSE at playing Starcraft 2 on minimum graphics settings than my DV6405US laptop (Athlon X2 TL-60 2 Ghz, 2 GB ram, Geforce 7200 graphics). And that's pretty bad!

Even doing basic internet surfing, the NF7 lags quite a bit. You can't horse it through pages quickly, it'll get all loaded up and lag out big time.

So NF7's are best relegated to the museum piece they now are. They were good in 2004, but this isn't 2004!

News flash: Athlon XP not as good as more modern processors with twice as many cores.
  • edited July 2011
Takes some work to make that board perform up-to par. Bone stock and with not the best components its a slug. I have tried several modern multi-core computers, have one in my household, and it holds up well, with exception that multitasking is limited, unlike with multi-cores. I can play WoW on ultra, and have several web sites open on my other two monitors (3 total). I am using Speedfan to bump my FSB to 515.8MHz on demand.

That's a great FSB OC. I never got mine up nearly that high. My biggest problem with that generation was I always heard about the good processor steppings a bit too late and never got a phenomenal one. My best Athlon XP (still in my sig) was a mobile Barton like yours, but I think I only got it up to 2300 before either it or my RAM would take no more.

I think the highest I ever got mine was 504 before AGP/9800 Pro shit out. Ah, the good old days.

//EDIT: "Ah, the good old days," I said, as though today were any different. The basic formula is still the same: get some good RAM (DDR3-1866 will do just fine) and raise the FSB--or whatever passes for the FSB--and tinker with the multiplier. Only now the stakes are higher: 4-5GHz vs. 2.2-2.4GHz.

Computing is more exciting than ever!
