Unigraphics/Catia on Desktop.

Anyone out there have any recomendations for running graphics software on a desktop? I have a friend who wants to do it on a budget and he was wondering what video card he should go for. Will a 128 ATI work? Perhaps a 9600xt? Any recomendations. Everything will be running under XP.

I've set up catia workstations, and I would highly recommend Matrox Millenium cards. The Millenium G550 (dual head) is an affordable high quality 2D card. Radeons are enthusiast cards for gamers. He needs a professional 2D card. The G550 is no slouch at 3D acceleration, but it's crappy for gaming and hardware T&L. But, you don't need all that for catia/unig anyways....

Newegg has Millenium P650s for $155.00.. That's even better than the G550. The G550 is $103. The P650 is built on a lite version of the Parhelia processor, and the 2D color fidelity and performance is quite stellar on those cards.

I believe that some of the cad/cam machines we have run Unigraphics. As I recall, they have 9800 Pros...

I'm not saying that a Radeon will suck for Catia/Unig, but it's wasted power (and wasted money), and the Matrox cards have better 2D performance and color fidelity. I don't know what kind of monitors his friend will be using, but if they are high end cad/cam monitors, then you will get a clearer picture with a parhelia based card like the P650.

Hes not using anything high end as a monitor, but he will be doing 3d rendering and such. Will a faster card like the ATI be better for when he has things modeled in 3d (Several parts on the same screen in 3d etc)?

I think the Millenium P650 is the best choice. It will be able to handle his 3D needs unless he wants uber-1337 framerates in 3Dmark and doom3.

Hmmm, ok. He really doesn't care about gaming, its mainly just going to be a graphics station and thats it. So an ATI would be overkill then. Why the Fire GLs and Quadros then? I thought they were for graphics stations.

//edit- Also while we're at it. You have any system spec recomendations you have found that work well for the budget minded? Hes looking at some barebones kits from Tigerdirect (sigh) but they seem to be pretty good deals. I'm trying to point him towards the biostar kit (Case, Board, PS 400W, nforce2, $119) but he wants to go for the durn Soyo KT400 (Same stuff, $109).....
