So I guess this is pretty bad...

My girlfriends brothers computer. Not sure what happened, but I'm too tired to be ripping the whole thing apart tonight. I'm going to try swapping out the cpu tomorrow and hope that the whole system didn't get cooked.

the thermal compound over the cpu looks fine tho. Was it working when you pulled it apart?

Just beeped when turned on. 2 beeps if I took the ram out, and 8 if the ram was in.

Is your girlfriend's brother's CPU addicted to cigarettes?

Naaah. The German one would've been better. Sure, it would've cost you $150, but it'd keep the CPU at 0*C with intake air temperatures up to 100*C, it'd only weigh 200g, use almost no power, have no condensation issues (even with freezing CPU temperatures), be dead easy to install, virtually silent, and it'd never wear out. ;D;D

I have to call :bs: on that one. Sounds good though. Where's your German flag smiley? :nudge:
The Japanese would do all the above, and sell it for less than half the price, you just wouldn't be able to read the owners' manual. :eek3::cool:

BS? BS?!?! It's not BS, it's all true. But you're right, the japanese would buy a german heatsink, reverse engineer it (ever seen the LS430 vs. a W140 [92-99] Mercedes S-Class?), and sell a product that's as good as or better than the German one for $75 or less... Stupid Japanese heatsink manufacturers ;D

And the Koreans would do the same to the Japanese. Talk about a heck of a trickle down effect eh?

Yeah, but the Korean heatsinks would fall apart for no apparent reason 6 months after installation ;D

Actually no, he doesn't smoke and there's a pair of wire mesh filters on the front 2 intake fans.

That is better. One thing, you might try some Alcohol to take the remaining HS compund off. If it then oxidizes, you can use some 1000 Grit followed by 1500 Grit wet-dry paper to remove oxidization and get it burnished real smooth.

There was WAY too much HS junk on that CPU, the burned black in first pic could be where CPU shorted (surface resisters shorted or shorted by making bridges across timing cuts). I clean the CPU real careful around core and get all the junk off from around die to make sure nothing can short. Try the old CPU after it has been cleaned with alcohol and then new HS very carefully applied in real thin layer ONLY on the die. Pressure of HS will cause the HS compund to spread, looks like that is what happened here. AS4 or Ceramique is what I use here, the AS5 was not performing well.
