Anybody got an ATI Mobility M6 and playing Delta Force Black Hawk Down?

I have had the game for months and months and played it numerous times but recently the dreaded blue screen appears the second i click the BHD icon!! It then displays the blue screen saying that there was an error in the graphics on ..... then gives loadsa numbers!!

Anybody else have this problem using this graphics card?

Any help would be appreciated

Run a 3D benchmark program for a few loops and see if it crashes. Use 3DMark2001, for example.

If it crashes, your chip is probably dying. The only other thing you can try is to update your video drivers, reinstall directX, or reinstall the game itself and see if that makes it go away. You also might want to check your system memory using Memtest86+

Yea i've tried re-installing the game, updated the video drivers etc etc,

I'll try a benchmark on it. If the card is dying its only had about 11 months life!!! which doesnt seem likely!!

well if heat is an issue inside your comp, then it's very possible. But make sure you check the memory too. It could be that instead of the video adapter.

Not much i can do about heat... its a laptop. How would it be a problem with the memory? I have no problems with any other software so how would the memory affect it? Just curious!!

If the game really pushes the memory "deep" and uses a lot of memory, you might be hitting a specific bad register on the DIMM. I'd run that memtest just to rule it out.

Laptop heat can be addressed too, but if the video adapter is damaged, you're right - it's too late. They make cooling products for laptops or you can make sure that you keep the heatsink and fan very clean and dust free.

I'm running the memory test as we speak. If there is a problem with it i'll simply take it back and demand a new one!! I did not pay £1100 for it to just die after 11 months.

If the memory test doesn't come up with any problems I will take one of the dimms out and see if it will run on just one.

My heatsink is generally very clean, but the area on the case around it does get hot. What can I do to address this?

Ok, 12 hours 30 minutes later and the memory test is still going!! How long is it likely to last?

How many passes has it made? If it's made a pass with zero errors, then your memory is good :)

Cant remember how many pases it was but there wasnt a single error so that rules the memory out of the equation. I will run a benchmark test on the graphics to see if that gives me the same problem.

I was also thinking, the first time i used the game was when I didnt have service pack 1 installed, and it maybe since i have installed it, the game hasnt run properly. Is there anyway of un-installing sp1? i remember an option to choose to allow u to un-install it but i dont think i took the option.

Hi, I have a laptop with the M7 in, and I get exactly the same problem with BHD.

I would appreciate if you could let me know if you get any resolution to this issue, I will try some things my end and let you know if i have any luck.

Are you Win XP SP1 as well? If you are then it may be a glitch with the service pack. What have you tried? Which driver version(s) have you used?
  • edited June 2004
Hi, Yes i am running Service Pack 1.

The VGA driver I am using is for a M7 version 6.13.10.6043.

I havent tried any other vga drivers as the manufacturer of the laptops do not have any other version's available.

I would be surprised if it is a service pack 1 issue, as I run the game fine on a desktop system with service pack one installed.

Laptop heat can be addressed too
Heat was the first thing I thought of. Been playing well for six months, until recently? Could be dust buildup in the CPU heatsink/heatpipe assembly. (I don't know how video cards/chips are cooled in laptops.)

mine is deffo not heat related.

I play far more graphically advanced games with out problems.

When you installed SP1, it should have included an SP1-uninstall file. You could always try that, then see how it plays. I would just ensure that you return to Windows Update to download all the critical updates that were once part of SP1.

I have a feeling that sp1 has an impact on this somehow as the first time I ran BHD I didnt have sp1 installed and as soon as i did it crashed.

Also, does anybody know how to address a problem with over heating laptops! I shud probably start a new thread for this or sumfin! Yea actually I will! lol

BTW what laptop do you have?

what drivers are you using for them(never mind you already posted them, they are kinda old)

the omagas work just fine on ATI mobile chips

    http://omegacorner.com/index_ati.html

that is what i use on mine

make sure you have DX9 installed with the newer drivers

Gibbons, the notebook cooler isn't a solution unless the problem is caused by excessive heat. (Did I miss something?)

Tried the Omega drivers, same fault unfortunately.

to me it does not sound like an vid card problem

sounds like an game error before it evens starts the game?

    just a thought

how did you reinstall the game?
  • edited June 2004
Sorry for the delay in posting, I have tried updating the intel inf drivers and now the game doesn't crash, although it still fails to load it doesn't blue screen. I am going to try and find 5 minutes to re-install the game with the new inf drivers in place.

I will let you know if i have any success.

I have re-installed the game and it still doesn't load, I have a few m8's trying to get the game running on other laptop's and they are having similar issues, I just think the game is at fault, good news is that joint operation works so we will all have to buy that instead. :celebrate

    Cheers
