Adding another computer

I have 1 dedicated computer that just Folds. I would like to add Folding to my main computer. While it will be up and down, every bit helps.
When I set up Folding, do I list the second computer with the same name (Dragstk, in my case) and team (Team 93, of course)? I'd like both my computers output to be listed in the stat pages, as just 1 entry.
Anything else I need to know? (about Folding...that is)
Thanks;
Dragstk

Yea. Just keep the same name and team number.

Uh have you set any flags for your pc's?

    If not here's a good link: http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6347&highlight=graphic+flags

With some help from KingFish (thank you, sir), I'm running -advmethods -forcesse -verbosity 9. So, I'll be adding those to the next set up.
    Thank you, Al

I downloaded Folding, set it up and we're off and running. I checked the status log,and it showed I was running a Tinker. No big deal, but as I have never gotten one before, it made me curious. I checked in Program Files and found Core_65. Is this the core to run Tinkers?
I deleated it, let Folding install another core, but got the same one again. My dedicated Folder runs Core_78.
After going to the "Everything about F@H" thread, I see a place to get the latest cores. I see there is Core_79 now.
Is the 79 core the best one to get? Do I get the f@h, or .exe.bz version.
Once downloaded, I just direct it to my Folding Folder?
I apologize for the noob questions. And I certainly don't mind running the Tinkers, but I'd also like to run the Gromacs, also
    Thank you;

The core varies depending on the type of protein you are Folding. There is no "good" or "bad" core, other than updated versions of the same core #.

I'm not sure, but I think when F@H is first installed it generally starts you off with a Tinker. Glad to see you expanding your Folding empire!

View the FAHlog.txt file and the very beginning should look like this ...

    --- Opening Log file [March 2 03:07:52]

    # Windows Console Edition #####################################################
    ###############################################################################

    Folding@home Client Version 4.00

    http://folding.stanford.edu

    ###############################################################################
    ###############################################################################

    Arguments: -service -advmethods -forcesse

    Warning:
By using the -forceSSE flag, you are overriding program
safeguards that monitor the stability of SSE
instructions on your system. If you did not intend
to do this, please restart the program without
-forceSSE. If work units are not completing fully,
then please discontinue use of the flag.

If it does and you see the -advmethods flag then you have every chance of getting gromacs as everyone else. So sooner or later you'll get one hang tight! :fold:

Core 65 is the tinker core. The .bz is a linux file extension, that or a Mac. Not windows.

Core 79 is not for windows.:)

    You are going fine.:)

Linux. Means Binary ZIP. Can be gunzipped (gunzip is Gnu's unzipper, but I would have to read up on what switches are used for a .bz or tell someone to use ARK in KDE or Gnome). Mac uses something similar, not the same extension though (not natively AFAIK but it has a been a while since I have played on a Mac, they can extract .bz and .bz2 archives if the right utils are used, though). Apples used to use .bin and .rar and still might, and they can usually make tarballs with Tar also. The .bin extension was used by older apples both as archives and as executables. In fact, the most common passing of public domain files was as .bin attachments to emails or BBS postings.

Anyone who has lots of oddball archives can look at them with PicoZIP in Windows if they want, but those that do not contain .exe files are not for Windows. The silly thing knows how to look at and work with 23 kinds of archives, nice thing to have in your software toolkit.

Thanks for all the info. It helps that you explain these things. I'm always learning here, and I appreciate it.
csimon-although I have -advmethods -forcesse type in program files, it does not show up in the status log. I'll just wait out this WU, and see if things change after the first wu being finished.
prof- I didn't mean to say that Tinkers are "bad". My full time Folding machine has run straight gromacs, and if this machine runs Tinkers, so be it. They all need to be run.
I know that running advmethods and forcesse makes the machine run quicker, and I'm just trying to get some work done. :)
Thanks again for the explainations and the help.

No, I know you didn't mean that. What I was trying to say was that as long as you have the latest core (of whatever type, 65, 78, etc) it will do the job.

Besides, you're doing just fine! :woowoo:

It sounds like you don't have the flags set right. The should come up in the header whenever you start folding.

    edcentric;
I went and checked Program Files, and 3 flags are there, -advmethods -forcesse -verbosity 9. I checked that I spelled them right, even checked them against my other computer. So, I retyped it all, rebooted, and got the same results. No flags, in the status log.
I'll just wait out this Tinker, see what happens after that.

I waited until the computer finished the 400 Tinker. (this took close to 30 hrs. to run) and this is what I get, below. It is repeated at least 20 times.

dragstk ...how do you start and stop the folding client? With a shortcut or what?
  • mmonninmmonnin Centreville, VA
    edited March 2004
In your work folder, do you have any files that have results in the filename. If not then wipe the whiole FAH directory and start over. If you have a reults file then keep those and your queue and start over.

You also might want to try deleting the core and client and getting another fresh copy.

OK then that means you have the GUI. During the install there is a shortcut placed in the startup folder.

I have 2 wuresults in my work file. So, I just cut and paste that and the queue somewhere else, deleate all of Folding, redownload, and put the work and queue back in?
  • mmonninmmonnin Centreville, VA

Yep cut those files out. Redownload the client, install the client and put the wuresults file back in the Work folder and paste the queue over top of the queue if there is one after install. Not sure if it will work with it being the GUI. Hopefully.:)

Maybe it's safe to assume you have a shortcut in the startup menu ...check to see it that is true ...in that case if you see a shortcut in there we will edit it and you are on your way to gromacs and sse

You wouldnt happen to be getting the same WU would you? Hmmm well you got tinkers and gromacs to do the same thing.

One problem found on the community was file permission errors. I guess some ppl got the v3Decompress error when they were not logged as the user whom installed FAH. Might want to check permissions.

Try scandisk. If all else fails uninstall it all and start over.

If you're client runs automatically when you boot the system then you probably either have the "flower" cog installed in the startup folder as shown below or you have installed it as a service ...unless it is being started by EMIII? See startup folder below ...is the red cog there on your system?

I tried deleting the core twice, and yes, both times I got WU 06. As we speak, it has downloaded core_65, after struggling to get going(a few errors) it is now running a 400 Tinker. But I really don't want to wait another 30 hours to find out all of this is for nothing again.
I am the only user of this computer. So everything is set to me.
Is it possible that something like Spybot, AdAware,AdSubtract or something similar is stopping this? Both my computers have ZoneAlarm and Norton antivirus, but I have spam, pop up filters on my main computer.
I'll run scandisc, and then try a reinstall.

right click the start up flower and then pick properties ...this is where we need to install the flags for them to work.
We need to make it look similar to the one I made below ...only add the flags as I have them since the rest seems to be working (more or less).

csimon-even though I now have 4 of 400 done in this Tinker, no flags are present in the log file.
With my dedicated computer, if I reboot, it loses the flags. So I shut off Folding, delete the Core_78, reboot, and all flags come back and are listed in the status log
