Is it possible you are running into a permissions problem? Are you installing as administrator and logging in and running it the same way?

I smell a MS security patch issue... :skeptic:

He already said he was the only user. I found that possible problem on the community as well.:)

    csimon-my dedicated computer is:
    Asus A7V333
    XP2100 w/Zalman HS
    512 (single stick) Kreton memory
    20G.WD HD
    Generic 8bit video card
    XP Pro OS

Profdlp- I have deleted Folding, twice now, and on the start up page of Folding, logged in, in my name, 2nd time as administrator. I now can get Folding to start with core_78, and all flags installed, but it still it has errors trying to start

    [02:59:34] Preparing to commence simulation
[02:59:34] - Assembly optimizations manually forced on.
[02:59:34] - Not checking prior termination.
    [02:59:34] Couldn't v3Decompress
[02:59:34] - Fatal: Could not decompress work unit data.
[02:59:34] Error: Could not open work file
    [02:59:34]
    [02:59:34] Folding@home Core Shutdown: FILE_IO_ERROR
    [02:59:38] CoreStatus = 75 (117)

ok ...so you're using an amd processor and WinXP ...that's really all I need to know.

Lets see if we can manually stop and start WinFAH ...try right clicking on the flower in your taskbar and choose exit (or whatever looks simialar to that) ...that should stop it ...then go to start up and double click the flower there ...that should restart it ...then check the log file to see if that does some good.

csimon-nope, no good. I have started and stopped Folding several times, and rebooted several times, removed the core, removed the core and the client, uninstalled and reinstalled about 6 times now. Same error, every time (see my last post). It tries to run, gets error, several times, then deletes work unit and tries again.
I have checked the registry on both computers, configure pages, everything I can think of. The only difference is the user ID in the registry.
It's almost midnight here, and I've been up since 6am. It will be all good in the morning :) I'll work on it tomorrow.
I really appreciate all your efforts, from everyone.
    Thank you

This thread from the Folding Community Forums had some suggestions you might find useful. The guy wasn't sure exactly what it was that fixed his problem, though.

Dragstk, with all the problems you seem to be having trying to run the GUI version, why don't you d/l the no-frills console version and give it a try instead. Just install the exe file into the folder of your choice, I use "Folding1" myself without the quotes, and then make a shortcut from it to your startup folder and add the flags to the startup shortcut. To send the console to the system tray, I use a program called TrayIt, which is in the links in the sticky here. It will take the console off the taskbar and send it to the system tray when the console window is minimized. Then, you can monitor progress with EMIII with no problems and if you really want to see what the proteins you are working on look like you can d/l the chime plugin from the link at em-dc.com and then EMIII will give you a nice pretty picture of the proteins.

I would say right offhand that most of the long-time folders using windows are using the console client because it gives less trouble and you can run multiple instances of the client with the console also, which is especially important for dual rigs or HT enabled P4 machines.

    Folding...day 2 :-/ :smiles:
I istalled the GUI version with just the -advmethods and -forceasm flags
    same errors
I installed the console version-didn't even get to the installing flags part, same errors :banghead:
I suspect that I have something turned on, or off, or some program installed that is stopping Folding from running. But I have tried installing Folding with all firewalls, ad blocker, pop up stopper, anti virus turned off. Same results.
I'll just Fold on one machine, until I can get another built up

Have you checked to see if the HDD is good?

    Well, I'm Folding :celebrate
mmonnin-I ran the WD diagnostic program, no errors
I was reading about witenoiz running straight Tinkers, that got me going to try this again. Installed Folding, and it took off :D
Core_78, running a gromacs. No flags, but then I didn't put any in. I'm almost reluctant to stop it and put them in.
Maybe it was a bad download??? I have no idea, I didn't change anything, except the time when I downloaded..
Thank you all, who took the time to help

:banghead: OK, I give up trying to make this machine Fold. :banghead:
At 3 this afternoon, it started running a 5000step WU. It finished it at 7pm.
No flags, yet it ran it faster than any I have seen (in my limited experience.)
Sent the work back, I got credit, then right back to the same errors I've had all along. :shakehead

I thought I'd add a footnote to this thread.
I now have had Folding running on my computer for several days, and running well.
The problem all along was AdSubtract.
I can uncheck everything in there, so that it does nothing, but if it is on, Folding will not work. Close it down, and I'm good to go.
Oh well, learn something new every day

Good to hear that your persistence paid off! You have surely helped a lot of others as well. This will be added to the list of things to check when F@H isn't working right.

    :thumbsup::fold:
